New Ted Rogers Leadership Centre will prepare students to be leaders of the future

Brian Segal

Brian Segal, Rogers Publishing president and CEO, is the chair of the Ted Rogers Leadership Centre, dedicated to the leadership development of business students at Ryerson.

A former president of Ryerson is chairing a new centre in the Ted Rogers School of Management that will help business students learn about leadership.

Brian Segal, who led Ryerson from 1980 to 1988 and is currently the president and CEO of Rogers Publishing, is returning to campus to head the Ted Rogers Leadership Centre,  launched in early October.

Segal said he wants the centre to influence the development of management students through seminars and speakers series. Alumni and industry leaders from different sectors will work with students to help them understand the challenges they might face in the business world of the future.

"There are qualities of leadership that individuals can acquire," Segal said. He suggests that not all leaders are born leaders, but that they are shaped by several factors, which often include education and mentorship.

The centre bears the name of one of Canada's great business leaders, Ted Rogers, who died in December, 2008. Rogers' wife, Loretta, and daughter, Martha, were at the campus launch of the leadership centre.

The work of the centre will revolve around three key areas: teaching; leadership events and communication; and scholarship and research.

Students will have a hand in the types of speakers coming to the centre. Learn from Leaders seminars will give students the chance to request speakers from specific sectors they're interested in, such as finance and marketing.

Segal has confirmed Bill Linton, chief financial officer, Rogers Communications Inc. and Javier San Juan, CEO, L'Oreal Canada as speakers in the first Learn from Leaders seminar.
