From left: Professors Karim Ismaili, Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology; Jennifer Lapum, Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing; and Noel George, Department of Chemistry and Biology are three of 25 Ryerson faculty nominated for TVO's 2010 Best Lecturer Competition.

Ryerson continues its strong showing in TVO's Best Lecturer Competition with 25 professors nominated by students and alumni for the 2010 title.

"Congratulations to all of the nominees and thanks to all of our students and alumni who provided the nominations. Teaching and learning excellence is one of Ryerson's historic strengths and top priorities, and I am pleased and proud that members of our community nominated no fewer than 25 of our faculty for the TVO Best Lecturer Competition," said Provost and Vice-President, Academic Alan Shepard.

Ryerson has the third-highest number of lecturers in the competition. A total of 332 professors from 37 post-secondary schools have been nominated. Ryerson has a record of success in the contest: history professor Arne Kislenko won in 2005 and professors Oren Amitay, psychology; James Cunningham, philosophy; and Dana Lee, radio and television arts have all been semifinalists in the past.

On Dec. 7, 20 semifinalists will be announced and in February 2010 the top 10 finalists will be named. The top 10 lectures will then air on TVO's Big Ideas program beginning March 6, 2010. Viewers can vote online for their favourite, with the winner to be announced April 17. First prize is a $10,000 TD Insurance Meloche Monnex scholarship for the professor's school. The competition is in its fifth year.
