A team of Ryerson students has been named national champion in entrepreneurship, and is heading to Los Angeles to represent Canada at a global competition.

At the 2010 Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) National Exposition in Calgary last week, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Ryerson was crowned #1 team in the country after days of intense competition. The event challenges post-secondary students from more than 40 universities and colleges to present their entrepreneurial outreach projects and business venture achievements to a panel of top Canadian executives.

Toronto students swept the championships at the Calgary competition. Ryerson took top spot in the team challenge, while the winner of the individual student championship was Vincent Cheung of the University of Toronto.

"Students across the GTA are consistently achieving great success in entrepreneurship with passion, energy and fantastic ideas," said President Sheldon Levy. "We are extremely proud of the SIFE Ryerson team, and our congratulations also to Vincent Cheung. With students like these as leaders, Toronto has a bright future as a centre of industry and innovation."

Clive Beddoe, founder and chairman of WestJet Airlines, was one of the competition judges and he told the Calgary Herald he liked what he saw from the students.

"It's been very, very impressive," said Beddoe. "If this is the quality of entrepreneurs that Canada can produce, then Canada should be able to stand tall just as we did at the Olympics."

SIFE Ryerson captured the most awards at the competition. As ACE national champs, the business students will serve as Team SIFE Canada at the SIFE World Cup in Los Angeles in October.

In addition to winning the ACE National Cup, SIFE Ryerson also won:
• First place – HSBC Financial Education challenge;
• Second place – Scotiabank Go Green competition; and
• Second place – RBC Blue Water challenge.

"It is the most amazing feeling ever. Winning the national championship is the representation of the passion and dedication that each of the members of SIFE Ryerson puts forward every single day. Together we are creating a better future for ourselves and our community," said Rohan Sharma, SIFE Ryerson president.
