Orientation set to start school year on a fun vibe

Orientation

Orientation allows students to meet their peers, discover the campus and transition to life at Ryerson.

Next Monday Orientation gets underway, welcoming new and returning students to campus.

From Aug. 29 to Sept. 2, RU Student Life - a division of Student Services - is hosting a gamut of activities to get new students acquainted with the campus and its surrounding neighbourhood, allow first-years to meet their peers and help incoming students transition to a new school year. Although Student Services supports Orientation, it's organized by students for students. The O-Team started planning for the eventful week early on in the summer, brainstorming and planning activities that will appeal to all Ryerson students.

A full schedule of Orientation events can be found at studentlife.ryerson.ca.

Students can make the most of Orientation by liking the RU Student Life Facebook page and following the Twitter feed to stay updated on all events. It's also a good time before the rush of classes to check off items on the to-do list, such as: getting a OneCard, Ryerson's school ID; making sure tuition is paid and all OSAP documents are in order; confirming class schedules on RAMSS and fixing any enrolment issues; and signing up for a Ryerson Athletic Centre (RAC) membership.

In addition, each faculty hosts its own mandatory orientation events to introduce students to their programs. Students are given an overview of their first-year experience, informed of what resources are available to them and encouraged to participate in icebreaker activities to meet fellow students.

Everyone is new and looking to meet new friends so it's an ideal time to find out where everyone's classes are and learn more about other Ryerson students.

International Student Services (ISS) offers many support services to the more than 1,500 scholars who come to Ryerson from across the globe. The department manages over 50 programs to ease international students' transition to Ryerson. ISS orientation starts today and runs until Sept. 9. Events are spread out over three weeks to give international students a chance to attend various welcome workshops and fairs. Although participation is not mandatory, new students are strongly encouraged to attend to receive essential information on topics such as immigration regulations and health insurance requirements, as well as the opportunity to meet other international students.
