It’s the start of a new year and with that comes new resolutions.
January is the month when people set new goals, head back to the gym and work towards a bigger and better 2012. The university provides some convenient services to help the community exercise their minds and bodies.
The Ryerson Athletics and Recreation Centre offers a range of programming that caters to beginners, intermediate and advanced athletes.
A series of conditioning programs helps men and women get the most out of their workouts. For example, the Ultimate Workout is a high-intensity boot camp style training that uses rubber tires, sleds and battling ropes to get hearts racing. Instructional classes such as aquatics and dance are another way to get in shape and for those seeking one-on-one assistance, personal trainers are available. Team sports are an opportunity to get into shape and be social. The RAC offers ball hockey, basketball, dodgeball, flag football, squash and indoor soccer.
After the winter break, bodies aren’t the only parts that need to be stretched and put back into shape. Learning something new offers many benefits such as building career opportunities. This January, The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education is launching workshops targeted at the video game industry. EDGE: Education for Digital and Games Entrepreneurs is a program, in partnership with Interactive Ontario, which teaches business skills training to gaming industry professionals. Workshops will focus on entrepreneurial finance, human resources management, intellectual property, principles of marketing, project management and leadership and entrepreneurial behavior. Whether it’s getting back into shape or learning a new skill, achieving your New Year’s resolutions starts with developing a good plan. Write down your resolution and create a plan of action with clear steps about how you can complete that goal. While resolutions can be set in one day, they sometimes take a whole year to accomplish. Revisit your list on a regular basis to make sure you’re staying on track but be flexible too. Unexpected things can happen to alter plans but the value of completing a desired goal doesn’t change.
