Rams athletes are closing in on the end of their season. But the men’s hockey, women’s and men’s basketball teams are just getting warmed up for the playoffs.
For the second time in the last three seasons, the Ryerson Rams men’s hockey team has qualified for the playoffs.
The squad completed regular season play last weekend and finished seventh in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) east. They’re facing the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) no. 10-ranked Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes (UQTR) Feb. 18 in game two of their best-of-three opening round series. The Rams won big in their series opener, defeating UQTR 9-2. Game two is at UQTR and game three if necessary, is Sunday, Feb. 19, also at UQTR.

The Rams finished the regular season with a 13-12-3 win-loss-tie record and 29 points. The 13 victories ties the Ryerson mark for wins in a season set by the 1988-89 Rams, who were 13-12-1. The 29 points is the most recorded in a single season by the Rams. This is also the first time in 23 years that the team has posted a winning record.
“It is a pleasure to see the hard work begin to pay off for many of our teams,” said Ivan Joseph, athletics director. “Our students and coaches have made tremendous strides over the past few seasons to put themselves in a position to be successful in post season play. I invite our fans and community to come out and cheer on your fellow Rams.”
The men’s basketball team has been on a five-game winning streak, putting them in third place in the OUA east division – something the squad hasn’t accomplished since the 2001-02 season. By assuring themselves as being at least the third seed in the east, Ryerson will also avoid the #1-ranked Carleton Ravens in the playoffs until the finals. Coach Roy Rana also reached the 12-win mark and boasts an above .500 record for the first time in his three-year tenure with the Rams.
Before playoffs begin during reading week, the Rams hit the road for their final two games of the season. Ryerson and the Ottawa Gee-Gees will tip off tonight in a battle for second-place in the east. The men will conclude the year against the CIS No. 1 Carleton Ravens (20-0), who will be looking to run the table in the regular season for the second year in a row.
Women’s basketball has enjoyed success for the last three games, pushing them into fourth place in the OUA east standings. The victory also vaults the Rams ahead of Queen's, assuring them a home playoff game in the first round of the post-season. Playoffs begin during reading week. Ryerson will end the regular season with two tough matches in Ottawa next weekend against the Gee-Gees on Friday and Carleton on Saturday evening.
While the other Ryerson Rams didn’t go on to the playoffs, women’s hockey concluded their inaugural OUA season this weekend at home against the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and Queen’s. It was a memorable season for the women, who were able to notch their first-ever conference victory just three games into the year; a 1-0 victory on the road against the Waterloo Warriors on Oct. 15. The road is yet to be paved for head coach Lisa Jordan who still has a few years to shape her roster of 20 rookies.
Men’s and women’s volleyball played a hard-fought season but wrapped up their regular games with a loss each to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The women’s squad had 10 new players in the line-up this season, finishing the year with 12 points in the standings and a record of six wins, an improvement of 10 points and five wins from the 2010-11 season.
Fencing team member Arseni Tikhomirov took home a bronze medal in the individual épée event at the 2012 OUA Men's Fencing Championships at Queen's University from Feb. 11-12.
