I am pleased to announce the appointment of Steven Murphy as dean of the Ted Rogers School of Management. The appointment is for a five-year term beginning August 1, 2013. Steven will also become a tenured professor in the Department of Entrepreneurship and Strategy.
Steven joins us from Carleton University where he is associate dean, research and external, at the Sprott School of Business. A nationally recognized expert in organizational behavior and an award-winning teacher, Steven brings to Ryerson comprehensive insight into strategic decision-making and leadership development that positions the Ted Rogers School of Management for continued success in advancing its teaching and research agenda, and its reputation for committed student engagement.
During his 10-year career at Carleton, where he also obtained his PhD, master and bachelor degrees, Steven garnered recognition for enhancing the business school’s reputation for graduate studies and undergraduate teaching. He served as associate dean, research and graduate studies, and taught MBA courses in China and the Middle East. His undergraduate teaching evaluations consistently ranked him as one of Sprott’s most innovative instructors, and for many years, he delivered a highly interactive seminar for PhD students on “what it means to be a teacher.” Steven has taught in the MBA program at the Telfer School of Business at the University of Ottawa, and has dealt extensively with executive education in the Master’s Program in Leadership at Lancaster University in the U.K. In 2010/11, he was a visiting academic fellow at the University of Western Australia’s Business School.
An accomplished researcher and presenter, Steven has over 110 papers, book chapters, technical reports and presentations to his credit and serves as a reviewer for numerous publications including the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology and the Journal of Business and Psychology.
Beyond his academic career, Steven has extensive consulting experience in both the private and public sectors working primarily on leadership development, senior management dynamics and executive coaching with clients that include virtually all federal government departments, as well as private sector clients in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. He is frequently quoted in national media on his research and its implications.
I extend my sincere thanks to Dean Ken Jones whose dedication and contributions have transformed Ted Rogers School of Management into what he proudly calls “Canada’s most connected business school.” His commitment to relevant and career-based education has accelerated the school’s national and international reputation
