2013 DCSN Student Recognition Awards & Scholarships

The application process for the 2012-13 Awards & Scholarships is now open. The application deadline is 5pm EST, Friday May 31, 2013.

Application Guidelines

  • Applications and all required documentation must be received by the Student Affairs Assistant by Friday May 31, 2013, 5pm EST to be considered
  • Please review all of the application guidelines for each award before starting the application process
  • Attendance at the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing Student Recognition Ceremony (Monday, October 28, 2013) is mandatory. The DCSN Awards Committee reserves the right to rescind your award if you do not attend
  • No more than (2) applications will be accepted per student
  • Award Recipients must complete a Photo Consent Waiver at the ceremony
  • Awards are based on the FAll 2012/Winter 2013 academic year

Nancy C. Sprott Nursing Award

To be eligible, students must demonstrate leadership in areas that exemplify the mission and values of the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, demonstrate a commitment to the field of Nursing through related work experience, volunteer activities in the community or in the Ryerson community.

Eligible students must:

- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, be an Ontario resident

- demonstrate financial need

- demonstrate academic excellence with a minimum CGPA of 3.00, a clear academic standing

Application must include:

  1. ­One-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate
  2. Resume
  3. 2 letters of support (from a faculty member, clinical advisor and/or employer)
  4. Completed budget form

Adele Turcotte Award in the School of Nursing

To recognize academic achievement of a Registered Nurse enrolled in the post-diploma, RPN or Masters of Nursing program; Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person; Ontario resident; demonstrate financial need; CGPA 3.00 or higher; demonstrate an interest in diabetes research, education, and care, or are currently practicing or intend to practice in the field. May be self-nominated or nominated by a faculty or member of the community.

Eligible students must: 

- Be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person

- Be an Ontario resident

- Demonstrate an interest in diabetes research, education and care, as well as experience and/or intention to work in the field

- Demonstrate financial need as determined by Ryerson University through completion of a detailed budget submission

- Have CLEAR Academic Standing with no disciplinary notices on file

- Be in clear academic standing with no disciplinary notices on file and no failed grades as defined by the candidate’s School in the calendar year in which they apply

- Application must include:

  1. ­Cover letter demonstrating interest in diabetes research, education and care, as well as experience and/or intention to work in the field
  2. Budget submission that demonstrates financial need
  3. 2 letters of support (from a faculty member, clinical advisor and/or employer)

Anne Whitaker Memorial Award

To an aboriginal post-graduate nursing or Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner, demonstrating financial need and based on a written submission outlining information about their original heritage and the type of professional care they propose to offer native peoples in a community of native people; Canadian citizen; Ontario resident.

Eligible students must: 

- Be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person

- Be an Ontario resident

- Demonstrate financial need as determined by Ryerson University through completion of a detailed budget submission

- Have CLEAR Academic Standing with no disciplinary notices on file

- Be of aboriginal descent and/or interested in working with an aboriginal client population

- Be in clear academic standing with no disciplinary notices on file and no failed grades as defined by the candidate’s School in the calendar year in which they apply

- Application must include:

  1. ­Cover letter outlining their current program of study as well as information about their aboriginal heritage and the type of professional care they propose to offer to aboriginal people within a community
  2. Budget submission that demonstrates financial need and confirms Ontario residency requirements

The Kensington Foundation Award

For good academic standing with strong clinical practice reflective of strong analytical and creative abilities and demonstrated commitment to the practice of nursing in the community (Collaborative or Post Diploma Nursing Degree Program).

To be eligible for this award students must:

- Be enrolled in the School of Nursing program and have clear academic standing

- Submit an application that includes:

  1. one page letter demonstrating nursing practice reflective of strong analytical and creative abilities and commitment to the practice of nursing in the community
  2. a letter of support from a clinical instructor

The Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association

Offered to a second or third year student in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program who demonstrate excellence and commitment in direct patient care, is academically excellent and demonstrates financial need.

Eligible students must: 

- Be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person

- Be an Ontario resident

- Demonstrate financial need as determined by Ryerson University through completion of a detailed budget submission in accordance with OTSS guidelines

- Be in their 2nd or 3rd year of the Ryerson Nursing Program at the time of application

- Demonstrate overall excellence in their studies with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

- Demonstrate excellence and commitment in direct patient care as described in the cover letter

- Submit an application that includes:

  1. ­  One-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate 
  2. ­  Resume
  3. ­  Completed budget form

Catherine Stanford Carter

For demonstrated clinical excellence & commitment in the focus areas of palliative care, community health or gerontology, commitment to continue in the designated area of interest beyond graduation, academic proficiency, exceptional communication skills & commitment to the development of the profession; Canadian citizen/permanent resident; Ontario resident; demonstrated financial need.

Submit an application that includes:

  1. ­  One-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate 
  2. ­  Resume
  3. ­  Completed budget form
  4.   A clinical letter of reference related to the student’s field of interest

Martha J. McKeown Award

Awarded to Collaborative and/or Post RN student who has demonstrated academic excellence and commitment in areas such as humanism, social justice and feminism; Canadian citizen/permanent resident; Ontario resident; demonstrated financial need.

Eligible students must: 

- Be an Ontario resident

- Demonstrate financial need as determined by Ryerson University through completion of a detailed budget submission in accordance with OTSS guidelines

- Currently be enrolled in the Ryerson School of Nursing and Post RN Program and in the top 10% of their program, inclusive of all, not just nursing courses

- commitment in areas such as humanism, social justice and feminism

- Post RN students should have an elective in one of the following areas: homeless clinic, public health, maternal enfant placement

- Students can be self nominated, nominated by fellow student or faculty nominated

Submit an application that includes:

  1. ­  One-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate 
  2. ­  Resume
  3. ­  Completed budget form
  4. ­  2 letters of support from nursing faculty
  5.   One to three examples of communication samples, such as, but not limited to newsletter,  position paper, essay, Powerpoint presentation

Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing Faculty Bursary

Offered to students in the Collaborative and Post Diploma Nursing programs who demonstrate financial need and must be academically clear.

Submit an application that includes:

  1. ­ One-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate 
  2. Completed budget form

Rachael Catherine Dean Scholarship

Nominations are accepted individual student, a peer or instructor who demonstrates a dedication to social advocacy, qualities of integrity and courage.

Inegracare Community Health Award (Sponsored by Integracare Incorporated)

Eligible students must: 

- Graduating student from the Collaborative or Post Diploma Program

- Mature student

- academic proficiency

- positive attitude

- contribution to the program and a career interest in geriatric or community health.

Gail Donner Award

For good academic standing, strong commitment to the profession and evidence of leadership skills.

Awards that do not require an application

Aaron Award

For demonstrating enthusiasm and interest in the care of the diabetic.

Aden Award

For demonstrating a dedication to studies and enthusiasm for the nursing profession.

Ryerson Nursing Staff Award

Four awarded to the highest cgpa for returning nursing students in collab and post diploma.

Dorothy Wylie Scholarship

Nominated by faculty -  a top student from the Post Diploma Program graduating in June or October that is planning on returning to hospital nursing with evidence of leadership potential.

L & D West Humanitarian Award

Nominated by faculty - Registration as a full time student in the fourth year of the basic program

Maintenance of a satisfactory academic standing

For demonstrating a high level of caring, empathy and compassion as a nursing practitioner as evidenced in clinical practice.
