Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing
  • 2017 Awards are based on the Fall 2016/Winter 2017 academic year. Collaborative program students who did not attend the Ryerson site during the Fall 2016/Winter 2017 academic year cannot apply.
  • Please review the criteria and required forms for each award. Incomplete applications, or applications missing required components as indicated in the awards criteria, will not be accepted. Only submit required documentation. If your application requires a budget form, no supplemental documentation is required for proof of expenditures.
  • A 2017 Award Application Form must be submitted with all applications. All applications must include your signature where required. Applications with digital signatures will not be accepted.
  • The maximum number of awards that may be applied for is three.
  • Attendance at the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing Student Recognition Ceremony in Fall 2017 is mandatory for award recipients. The DCSN Awards Committee reserves the right to rescind your award if you do not attend.
  • Completed applications must be scanned and submitted electronically by email to Stephanie Assenza, Student Affairs Coordinator, at stephanie.assenza@ryerson.ca. Paper-based submissions will not be accepted.
  • Applications for 2017 DCSN awards open on February 1st, 2017.

Aaron Award

For demonstrating enthusiasm and interest in the care of the diabetic.

Application must include:

  • Submit a one-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate

Adele Turcotte Award in the School of Nursing

Recognizes the academic achievement of a Registered Nurse enrolled in the Post Diploma or Master of Nursing program. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate an interest in diabetes research, education, and care, or are currently practicing or intends to practice in the field.  

Eligibility Information:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person
  • Be an Ontario resident
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher
  • May be self-nominated or be nominated by faculty or a member or the community

Application must include:

  1. Cover letter demonstrating interest in diabetes research, education and care, as well as experience and/or intention to work in the field
  2. Budget Form
  3. Two letters of support (from a faculty member, clinical advisor and/or employer)

Aden Award

For demonstrating a dedication to studies and enthusiasm for the nursing profession.

Anne Whitaker Memorial Scholarship

Recognizes the academic achievement of a full- or part-time student enrolled in the Post Diploma Degree Program, Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) Certificate, Master of Nursing or the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program who plan to serve professional care to the native community.

Eligibility Information:

  • Be of aboriginal decent and/or demonstrated interest in working with an aboriginal client population
  • Be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person
  • Be an Ontario resident
  • Have clear academic standing with no disciplinary notices on file
  • Demonstrated financial need

Application must include:

  1. Cover letter outlining current program of study as well as information about aboriginal heritage (if applicable) and the type of professional care they propose to offer to aboriginal people within a community
  2. Budget Form
  3. Letter of support (from Employer or Director of Volunteer Activities)

Caregiver Recognition Award in Honour of Sally and James Finney

Recognizes a Collaborative or Post Diploma student who has demonstrated their commitment to caregiving in the healthcare field. Preference will be given to those with a focus on dementia and/or the elderly.

Eligibility Information:

  • Be a full-time or part-time Post Diploma student or a Collaborative student and excel in a long-term care clinical experience
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher

Application must include:

  1. ­One-page cover letter that demonstrates their contribution and commitment to caregiving in the healthcare field
  2. One letter of support from a faculty member or clinical placement advisor
  3. Budget Form

* Faculty may nominate students by submitting a nomination letter

Catherine Stanford Carter Award

Recognizes a Collaborative or Post Diploma student for demonstrating clinical excellence and commitment in the focus areas of palliative care, community health or gerontology, a commitment/intent to continue in the designated area of interest beyond graduation, exceptional communication skills and commitment to the development of the profession.

Eligibility Information:

  • Be an Ontario resident
  • Have clear academic standing
  • Be in third or fourth year of the Collaborative program or have completed a minimum of 50% of the Post Diploma program

Application must include:

  1. One-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate 
  2. Resume
  3. Budget Form
  4. A clinical letter of reference related to the student’s field of interest

DIVE into Nursing Leadership Award

Recognizes a Post Diploma or Collaborative student who has demonstrated leadership in social advocacy for vulnerable populations in their community. 

Eligibility Information:

  • Be enrolled in either third or fourth year of the Collaborative program or in first or second year of the Post Diploma program
  • Be in clear academic standing
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher

Application must include:

  1. One-page essay describing why they are an ideal candidate
  2. Resume

Dorothy Wylie Scholarship

Recognizes a top student from the Post Diploma Program graduating in June or October that is planning on returning to hospital nursing with evidence of leadership potential.

Eligibility Information:

  • Must be nominated by faculty.

Gail Donner Award

For good academic standing, strong commitment to the nursing profession and evidence of leadership skills.

Integracare Community Health Award (Sponsored by Integracare Incorporated)

Recognizes a student in the Collaborative or Post Diploma Program who demonstrates a positive attitude and contribution to the program with a career interest in geriatric or community health.

Eligibility Information:

  • A mature student in the full-time or part-time Post Diploma student or a Collaborative Nursing program
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstration of a positive attitude and contribution to the program
  • Demonstrated career interest in geriatric or community health

  1. One-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate

Kensington Foundation Award

Recognizes two graduating students in the Collaborative program and two graduating students in the Post Diploma program for demonstrating nursing practice reflective of strong analytical and creative abilities and commitment to the practice of nursing in the community.

Eligibility Information:

  • Be a graduating student in the Collaborative program or Post Diploma program
  • Have clear academic standing
  • Demonstrated commitment to the practice of nursing in the community

Application must include:

  1. One-page cover letter demonstrating nursing practice reflective of strong analytical and creative abilities and commitment to the practice of nursing in the community
  2. A letter of support from a clinical instructor

Martha J. McKeown Award

Recognizes a Collaborative or Post Diploma student who has demonstrated academic excellence and commitment in areas such as humanism, social justice and feminism.

Eligibility Information:

  • Be an Ontario resident
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Post Diploma students should have an elective in one of the following areas: homeless clinic, public health, maternal infant placement, etc.
  • May be self-nominated or be nominated by their peers or Nursing faculty/staff

Application must include:

  1. One-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate
  2. Resume
  3. Budget Form
  4. Two letters of support (one letter must be from a Ryerson Nursing faculty member)
  5. One to three examples of communication samples, such as, but not limited to newsletter, position paper, essay, Powerpoint presentation

Nancy C. Sprott Nursing Award

Recognizes a Collaborative or Post Diploma student who has demonstrated leadership in areas that exemplify the mission and values of the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, a commitment to the field of Nursing through related work experience, volunteer activities in the community or in the Ryerson community.

Eligibility Information:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person
  • Be an Ontario resident
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher
  • May be self-nominated or be nominated by their peers or Nursing faculty/staff

Rachael Catherine Dean Scholarship

Recognizes a student who demonstrates a dedication to social advocacy, qualities of integrity and courage.

Eligibility Information:

  • Nominations are accepted by individual student, a peer or Nursing faculty

Application must include:

  1. A one-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate

Rodney Yip Award

Recognizes the academic achievement of a student in the Collaborative or Post Diploma Program.

Eligibility Information:

  • Be either a third or fourth-year full-time program student
    OR part-time post-diploma degree student of the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing
  • Be in clear academic standing
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrate financial need through submission of a detailed budget form

Application must include:

  1. One-page cover letter describing why they are an ideal candidate

Usha George Award in Nursing

Supports a fourth year student in Nursing who has demonstrated strong academic performance and shown excellence in their clinical placement.

Eligibility Information:

1. Student must be registered as a fourth year full time Collaborative Undergraduate, OR a full time or part time Post Diploma student who has completed NCL 700 at Ryerson University

2. Have clear academic standing; and 

3. Minimum CGPA of 3.00

Application must include:

1.     Letter of support from clinical placement preceptor

Walker Wood Foundation Nursing Award

Recognizes the academic achievement of a Collaborative Nursing Student who has encountered significant life challenges.

Eligibility Information:  

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be enrolled in their first year of the four-year undergraduate degree program in the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing
  • Have a minimum CGPA of 3.00
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate how they have encountered a significant life challenge

Application must include:

  1. One page cover letter describing how they have encountered significant life challenge(s)
  2. Budget Form

Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association Award

Recognizes the academic achievement of a second and/or third year student in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or graduate degree program who has demonstrated excellence and commitment in direct patient care.

Eligibility Information:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person
  • Be an Ontario resident
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be in their 2nd or 3rd year of the Ryerson Nursing Program at the time of application
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrate excellence and commitment in direct patient care as described in the cover letter

Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing Faculty Bursary

Available to students in the Collaborative and Post Diploma Nursing programs through the generosity of current and retired faculty, administrative staff, alumni and community members.

Lisa Rae Bursary

Available to students in the Part-Time Post-Diploma Degree completion program in Nursing who demonstrate financial need. 

Eligibility Information: 

  • Registered as an undergraduate student in the Part-Time Post-Diploma Degree completion program in Nursing
  • Clear academic standing 
  • Demonstrate financial need through the submission of a budget form

Application must include: 

  1. One written statement (approx. 250 words) stating why you are a good candidate for the award. 
  2. Budget Form
