Awards, Scholarships & Bursaries 2011-2012

A variety of awards and bursaries are available through the School of Nutrition and to students across programs at Ryerson University. Many of these awards require applications to be submitted for their receipt. The School of Nutrition Awards Ceremony honouring students who have received these awards and bursaries is held each Fall.

A School of Nutrition award application form is to be included when applying to any School of Nutrition award or bursary.

Number:  4 awards
Approximate Value: $3,000 each
Eligibility/Criteria:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Open to current Ontario grade 12 U/M secondary school students entering the School of Nutrition program
  • For academic excellence (minimum 80% average, based on best 6 Ontario grade 12 U/M courses)

Application consists of:

  • Students should write to the School of Nutrition Awards Committee (naming the Joan Augustine School of Nutrition Award), a one to two page cover letter describing how the Nutrition program fits with the applicant’s own interests and aspirations.
  • Resume
  • A copy of High School Grades
  • Ryerson University Budget Form

Riva Loeb Entrance Awards

Number:  4 awards
Approximate Value: $3,000 each
Eligibility/Criteria:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Open to a first-year student entering the School of Nutrition program following a university experience obtained elsewhere (minimum 3.00 grade point average)

Application consists of:

  • Students should write to the School of Nutrition Awards Committee (naming the Riva Loeb School of Nutrition Award), a one to two page cover letter describing how the Nutrition program fits with the applicant’s own interests and aspirations.

Mikey Network Awards

Number:  2 awards
Approximate Value: $1,500 each
Eligibility/Criteria:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person;
  • Must be an Ontario resident;
  • Demonstrate financial need;
  • Open to all Nutrition students;
  • Applicants must have achieved a minimum 80% overall average in 6 Grade 12 U/M credits (if candidate is entering first year) or a minimum CGPA of 3.50 (if candidate is beyond the first year;
  • Students may be self-nominated or be nominated by their peers, staff or faculty members in the School of Nutrition
  • Applicants/nominator shall write in confidence, to the School of Nutrition Awards Committee, naming the Mikey Network Award and explain how the student meets the Award criteria; the application letter must include evidence of the applicant’s commitment to the promotion of nutrition to prevent chronic disease

  • Application letter describing why they are an ideal candidate
  • Letter of Support
  • Ryerson University Budget Form

Returning Nutrition Student Awards, Scholarships & Bursaries
The application deadline for returning Nutrition student awards is Friday, September 16th, 2011

NOTE: If you have received a Joan Augustine, Riva Loeb, May Maskow, Jennifer Welsh or Anne Selby Award last year (2010) please consider applying to other awards as we will not consider your application for these awards for this year. You may apply again next year.

The School of Nutrition Academic Achievement Award - Approx $600

This award was established to provide financial assistance and to recognize the academic achievement of a full-time student enrolled in the School of Nutrition.

Eligibility and Application Information:
Students must:

  • be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Protected Person;
  • be an Ontario resident;
  • be registered in a full-time program in the School of Nutrition;
  • demonstrate financial need as determined by Ryerson University through completion of a detailed budget submission in accordance with OTSS guidelines;
  • demonstrate overall excellence in their studies with a GPA of 3.33 or higher with a clear academic standing;
  • may be self-nominated or be nominated by faculty or a member of the community.

Application consists of:

  • The applicant or nominator will submit a letter explaining how the applicant meets the award criteria including a copy of grades and a Ryerson University Student Budget Form.

Brenda Ball Memorial Award - Approx $1,400

Criteria: full-time enrolment in Year 3 or 4 of the Nutrition and Food program; high academic achievement in previous academic year; demonstrated financial need; and living away from home.  Preference will be given to a student whose home residence is in Ottawa (failing that, Eastern Ontario, example east of Kingston).

Application requirements:

  • A letter (min 2 pages, max 3 pages) to the Awards Committee describing how the applicant meets the award criteria and describing his or her professional goals;

Carol Taylor Memorial Award - Approx $2,200

Criteria: full-time enrolment in Year 4 of the Nutrition and Food program; demonstrated financial need and strong academic potential. Preference will be given to students who live away from home. This award may be shared by two or more student and is applied against tuition.

  • A letter (min 2 pages, max 3 pages) to the Awards Committee describing how the applicant meets the award criteria and describing his or her professional goals;

Dorotea Landau Memorial Award -Approx $1,500

Criteria:  full-time students enrolled in their 3rd or 4th year in the Nutrition and Food program. 

Application requirements:  Applicants must submit a letter (one page) to the Awards Committee describing how the applicant meets the award criteria and describing his or her professional goals; will also submit a one-page essay indicating their interest and commitment to working with people living with diabetes through volunteer or paid experiences, or professional placement during their program of study at Ryerson University.  Applicants must have a CGPA of 2.75 or better and be in clear academic standing.

Elizabeth Chant Robertson Award -Approx $500

Criteria: full-time students enrollment in their final year in the Nutrition and Food program.

Application requirements: A letter (min 2 pages, max 3 pages) to the Awards Committee describing how the applicant meets the award criteria and describing his or her professional goals; must also submit an essay, assignment or project proposal that is in keeping with both the mission of the School of Nutrition – to prepare practitioners who have the knowledge, dispositions, and skills to create inclusive environments that optimize heath and social well-being – and the work and achievement of Dr. Elizabeth Chant Robertson whose early book on nutrition was one of the first creative and reliable sources of nutrition information for Canadians.

Ottawa Home Economics Association Scholarship - Approx $500

Criteria:  A resident of Ottawa (failing that, to the student whose home is closest to Ottawa); enrolled full-time in Year 3 or Year 4 of the Nutrition and Food program; high academic achievement in previous academic year.  The applicant must have a keen and sincere interest in the field of Home Economics and potential as a graduate.

Rheta Rosen Incentive Award - Approx $1,100

Criteria:  A resident of Ontario with family responsibilities; enrolled full-time in the 2nd or 3rd year of the Nutrition and Food program; satisfactory academic performance in previous academic year; demonstrated financial need and commitment to working in a community-based setting.

Application requirements:  A letter (min 2 pages, max 3 pages) to the Awards Committee describing how the applicant meets the award criteria & describing his or her professional goals, and a Ryerson University Student Budget Form.

Jennifer Welsh Food Security Award - Approx $1,500

Criteria:  The Jennifer Welsh Food Security Award will be awarded to one undergraduate student in the School of Nutrition who embodies the values of social justice, creative change and an orientation to food systems. Students may be self-nominated or be nominated by their peers, staff or faculty members in the School of Nutrition. 

Application requirements:

  • The applicant or nominator will submit a letter explaining how the applicant meets the award criteria by including: a letter explaining how the student embodies the values of social justice, creative change and an orientation to food systems;
  • A resume and
  • A Ryerson University Student Budget Form

Canadian Institute of Food Science & Technology

Toronto Section
2011 Scholarships

2 Awards of $2000 each are available to eligible students with high academic standing in the courses specified for the CIFST Toronto Section Senior Food Science Award, (FND 300, FNR 201, BLG 209/ENH 222 and FND 301 or equivalent work experience) and interest and career goals in the food industry and food science field.

These awards will be presented at Ryerson's 2011 Fall Awards Ceremony.

Criteria for Eligible Students:

1. Students enrolled in Ryerson's Food and Nutrition program that are interested and have career goals in the food industry and food science field.

2. Students must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.

3. Students must have achieved a minimum CGPA of B. Students with less than a CGPA of B may apply for the award; however, they must address the issue of their academic performance in their application package in Section B (accomplishments and how they relate to your career goals).

4. Students must complete the attached application and also be student members of CIFST to qualify.

5. Only those students who have completed the application will be considered for the CIFST Toronto Section 2011 Awards.

A CIFST Scholarship Application Form must be submitted with this application.

Canadian Institute of Food Science & Technology First-Year Scholarship

Toronto Section 2011 Scholarships

1 Award of $1000 is available to eligible students with high academic standing in the course specified for the CIFST Toronto Section Introductory Food Science Award, (FND 100) and interest and career goals in the food industry and food science field.

This award will be presented at Ryerson's 2011 School of Nutrition Fall Awards Ceremony.

Criteria for Eligible Students:

1. Students enrolled in Ryerson's Food and Nutrition program that are interested and have career goals in the food industry and food science field and who have completed the course FND 100 in Winter 2011.

2. Students must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.

3. Students must have achieved a minimum CGPA of B. Students with less than a CGPA of B may apply for the award; however, they must address the issue of their academic performance in their application package in Section B (accomplishments and how they relate to your career goals).

4. Students must complete the attached application and also be student members of CIFST to qualify.

5. Only those students who have completed the application will be considered for the CIFST Toronto Section 2011 Award.

Bursaries

The application deadline for School of Nutrition bursaries is January 13, 2012.  All applications for bursaries will be considered after the bursary application deadline

School of Nutrition Bursaries - Approx $1,000

Criteria: Students must be enrolled full-time and have completed at least one year of study in the Nutrition and Food program; demonstrated financial need; satisfactory academic performance (min CGPA of 3.0).  Preference will be given to students working on their first degree.

Application requirements:  A  two to three page letter explaining how the applicant meets the bursary criteria and a Ryerson University Student Budget Form.

Full-time course load* is defined as a minimum of 80% course load in both fall and winter semesters of the previous academic year.  Priority will be given to applicants with full-time course loads in the previous academic year. Some students take reduced course loads for financial or other reasons.  If you are taking fewer than five courses, and feel otherwise eligible to apply for one or more of these awards, please include information explaining your course load in your application.
