Dropping Classes / withdrawing from a program

How do I drop a course?

If you decide you do not want to continue in a course it is your responsibility to drop it within the posted deadlines. To drop a course you use the RAMSS system.

Note that you should check your status to make sure you successfully drop the course(s) in question otherwise you will receive an "F" or "FNA". Also, if you're on Probation you will need your Department/School's permission to drop a class.

What are the deadlines for dropping courses?

Deadlines for dropping courses indicate if you a) are eligible for a full or partial refund and/or b) can drop the course in good academic standing (i.e. the dropped course will not show on your transcript).

For course drop deadlines pertaining to continuing education see the Chang School Calendar for Important Dates.

For course drop deadlines pertaining to Graduate Students see the Significant Dates section of the Graduate website.

The following are the course drop deadlines for undergraduate classes:

Winter 2013

January 25/2013 : Last day to drop a class with 100% refund.

February 8/2013: Last day to drop a class for a 50% refund.

February 8/2013: Last day to drop a multi-term A/B class with no academic penalty.

March 28/2013: Last day to drop a single-term class with no academic penalty.

May 17//2013: Last day to drop a single-term class that began in may for 50% fees refund.

May24 /2013: Spring/Summer undergraduate multi-term (A and B combination) class(es) and be eligible for a 50% refund if applicable for full- and part-time undergraduate program students.

May31/2013: Last day to drop a single-term class that began in May with no academic penalty.

Please note that students enrolled in Chang school courses would have to follow that schedule.

For Spring/Summer class drop refund schedule please inquire at the Student Fees office.

What should I consider before dropping a course?

Before dropping a course you should check:

* if it is a prerequisite for any of your future courses;
* when it is likely to be offered next;
* if you have a probationary contract, whether you have permission to drop it;
* if the course is a requirement for graduation (especially if you are nearing the end of your program);
* if dropping it will affect your OSAP or any other funding you have.

Can I drop a course after the final drop deadline?

Normally NO, however, requests for a retroactive class drop will be considered on an exception basis only upon receipt of a written request from you to your department/school. This request must be supported by documentation verifying the medical reasons (Ryerson Medical Certificate found in the Forms Cabinetwww.ryerson.ca/currentstudents/forms/index.html) or unforseen circumstances which prevented you from dropping the class(s) by the deadline. The documentation should describe the dates and duration of the illness, should describe the impact it had on the student's ability to drop the class by the deadline, and any other information that the physician or other third party professional directly involved with the circumstance considers relevant and appropriate. The department/school Chair/Program Director will provide a recommendation to the Registrar's Office: Student Records. Requests submitted without supporting documentation will not be considered. There will be consultation with the student's program department before a final decision is made.
