What can I do to help my group work together successfully?
There are a number of steps you can take to increase the likelihood your group will be able to work collaboratively:
1) Begin by introducing yourselves and give each other your full contact information so you can be in touch as needed.
2) Ensure that you are all on the same page with your understanding of the assignment or project you have been given.
3) Trade schedules with each other and come up with mutually acceptable meeting times.
4) Delegate work as fairly as possible between group members.
5) Conflict is to be expected so agree ahead of time how you might resolve differences of opinion (by a vote, for instance).
6) If you have a group member who is domineering, or not doing their share of the work, try to resolve it with them first. If this doesn't work let them know you'll be speaking with the T.A. or Instructor about your concern.
What can I do if I am having trouble with a group project?
Check out The Learning Success Centre's Strategies for Resolving Conflicts in Group Projects for some good pointers on this topic.
If you can't resolve the problem yourself, you can speak with your professor or Chair/Program Director about the difficulties you are experiencing and ask for their assistance. It's better to do this sooner rather than later as problems left to fester often get worse.
