On May 18th, 2005 Ryerson University had the privilege of hosting Dr. Arthur Carty, National Science Advisor to the Prime Minister. Dr.Carty has a unique position from which to both view and to influence federal policy as it pertains to university based research. His presentation "Current and Future Directions for the Canadian Research System" addressed the importance of research to the knowledge economy and the role universities are playing in this endeavour. Although not a major subject of Dr. Carty's presentation, his Office has recently completed the draft discussion paper "A Framework for the Evaluation, Funding and Oversight of Canadian Major Science Investments". This paper will be of interest to anyone involved in "Big Science".
