Not Your Average Control Freak: Designing Control Systems for Robots and Aircraft Systems
Canada ranks high among the world leaders in robotics and aerospace engineering, and with the research being carried out by first-rate engineers like Guang Jun Liu at Ryerson University, Canada is guaranteed to hold on to its current ranking.
As the Canada Research Chair in Control Systems and Robotics, Liu develops unique ways to design and control robots and aircraft systems, thus providing solutions to common problems facing the Canadian aerospace industry.
In his current research, Liu designs control systems for modular and reconfigurable robots that enhance their performance by solving problems that have limited the robots’ capability. Liu’s robots are expandable, capable of lifting heavy payloads and able to tolerate component faults. They will be invaluable in space exploration as well as in handling hazardous materials or carrying out dangerous rescue and security operations.
Liu is also carrying out groundbreaking research into improving aircraft systems – increasing their reliability and reducing their operation costs – again by developing better control systems. His systems use multiple sources for airflow to minimize the cost of maintenance and airflow temperature control systems that are more fuel efficient.
