Professional Highlights
The Philosophy Department at Ryerson University is a rising centre of excellence in the North American philosophical community. In addition to having an impressive record of research contributions, the Department’s faculty have been consistently involved in making important contributions to the philosophical profession at large, to the university, and to the wider community.
Faculty members have research expertise in a wide range of philosophical fields, with a long list of important publications in continental philosophy, philosophy of mind, epistemology, philosophy of law, aesthetics, philosophy of language, philosophy of religion, professional ethics, and moral and political philosophy, among other fields. In addition to presenting work at conferences around the world, the Department’s faculty have also been very active in hosting conferences that have attracted numerous internationally-renowned scholars, thus contributing its share to the thriving research culture in the city. Currently, a third of the Department’s permanent faculty hold substantial external research grants, and three further grant applications have been made for this year’s SSHRC competition.
The Department’s faculty is also committed to the relevance of philosophy to broader social, cultural and political concerns in the community. Members of the Department play a vital role in running the Ryerson Ethics Network, have served on the Ethics Boards of local hospitals, and have been involved in various outreach programs designed to provide high school students and non-traditional students with opportunities to engage in philosophical reflection. The Department’s faculty also have a strong reputation for committed service to some of the most important and influential administrative and union committees within the university, with members on the Senate Academic Standards Committee, the Ryerson Faculty Association Executive and Negotiating Committee, and the School of Graduate Studies Council.
