Philosophy (MA)

Student Testimonials

Studying philosophy at the graduate level at Ryerson University has been a great experience. The professors are very inspiring, encouraging and highly enthusiastic about the material they teach. Working as a TA has been an invaluable work experience. My summer research gave me the opportunity to work under the supervision of two professors in two different areas of interest. I spent 3 months reading, writing and thinking through philosophical problems which prepared me to write my major research paper.

Choosing the MA program was a great decision. The program offers multiple courses ranging from early modern to present contemporary studies in ethics, language, epistemology, just to name a few. The professors have been highly enthusiastic and engaging all year and take a genuine interest in the work of their students. Best of all I have freedom and a helping hand in research projects, classes and TA work. The program here is challenging, engaging, extensive and most of all it’s exciting.

Ryerson Philosophy MA, Class of 2013

The faculty in Ryerson's MA program have been so helpful.  I have had great feedback on my work, which has helped me to refine my approach to philosophy. They also gave great advice as I prepared grant applications. The course offerings are great, and the Area Readings allowed me to explore topics in philosophy more independently, developing my research skills.  I've also had the opportunity to present my work at a number of conferences here on campus.  I highly recommend the program to anyone looking to take the next step in their philosophical development.

Making my way through the Philosophy MA program at Ryerson has been a great experience.  The diversity of the faculty has allowed me not only to pursue in-depth work in the areas of philosophy that are my primary research interests, but it has also exposed me to new philosophical interests in areas of philosophy that I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to explore.

The opportunity to do two ARE courses proved to be very valuable in developing my research skills and ability to direct my own studies, and the option of writing an MRP or a Thesis allows for the program to accommodate those students who wish to develop a more substantial understanding of one particular issue, as well as those students who prefer to cultivate broader philosophical interests.

The program has also done a great job in supporting graduate students by providing funding and support for various academic projects, such as organizing and attending conferences, establishing a philosophy journal, and participating in workshops.  This program has been great for me, on both an academic and a personal level.

- Leland Harper (BA, Kwantlen Polytechnic University)
