Sunil Johal holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the London School of Economics, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and an Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA-Hons) degree in History and Political Science from the University of Western Ontario.

He is currently a Director with the Ontario government's Open for Business initiative at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.  He previously spent two years as a Senior Policy Advisor with Cabinet Office where he provided strategic advice on a range of education and social policy issues to the Premier's Office and Cabinet. While at Cabinet Office he was also seconded to work as the Manager of the Program Review Secretariat at the Ministry of Finance. Prior to his tenure at Cabinet Office, Sunil worked at the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs and Democratic Renewal Secretariat on files including climate change, Ontario's electoral reform referendum and federal parliamentary reform.

Before joining the Ontario Public Service, Sunil spent time at the federal Treasury Board Secretariat where he worked on both the Gomery Commission of Inquiry and advised Cabinet Ministers on marketplace policy matters such as competition law, small business financing, and the national statistical system. He was also a Senior Policy Analyst at the Department of Canadian Heritage dealing with social cohesion, youth engagement, and cultural policy. He joined the federal civil service through the Privy Council Office's Recruitment of Policy Leaders initiative after working at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in the United Kingdom.

His research and teaching interests include the intersections between public administration theory and practice, the private and public spheres and law and policy.
