Welcome to the Department of Politics and Public Administration. The Department offers: The Department partners to deliver: MA in Public Policy and Administration This innovative program (offered in both full- and part-time configurations) integrates the fields of public policy and public administration to reflect the theoretical and practical realities of the political context of policy development, implementation and analysis; and, prepares graduates for further academic pursuits and careers in the public service at all levels of government, in the non-profit sector, in private sector organizations with significant relationships with government and in international organizations. Click here for further information on the graduate program leading to a Master of Arts (MA) in Public Policy and Administration BA in Politics and Governance (Full-Time) The BA in Politics and Governance focuses on a critical understanding of the public and private institutions, structures and processes of ‘governance’. The program offers courses in five sub-fields: Canadian, Comparative, Global, Policy, and Theory. Unlike traditional political science undergraduate degrees that focus on governmental actors and policy makers, our Politics and Governance program embraces a range of forms of governance. and Governance (Part-Time) The (part-time) BA in Public Administration and Governance aims to
provide its students with an opportunity to gain a better understanding
of organisations and operations in the public sector, as well as specialized
knowledge and skills necessary for career development. The program is
designed for managers, administrative officers, front-line service providers,
policy analysts in the federal, provincial or municipal governments;
social service agencies and other public or non-profit organizations.
In the part-time program, students may earn a Certificate, an Advanced
Certificate, and a degree. It is a cumulative process, in that the degree
includes the requirements of the Advanced Certificate, which includes
the requirements of the Certificate. It is comprised of several courses drawn from each of the sub-fields represented in the Politics and Governance program: Canadian, Comparative, Global, Policy and Theory. Students may select a configuration of courses that provides depth in one sub-field or a cross-section of several. Most upper-level courses have prerequisites, but those are also part of the Minor. Consult the course descriptions to determine the sub-field and prerequisite(s) of each course. It is comprised of three types of courses: courses in government which provide the students with insights into the nature of modern politics; policy courses which emphasize the various terrains on which government and organized interests interact; and courses in administration which provide practical skills used in the everyday world of public administration. Click here for further information on the Minor in Public Administration, and to see how this Minor can be done in conjunction with your program CERTIFICATE (post-baccalaureate) in Public Administration and Leadership The post-baccalaureate Certificate is designed for individuals who have already completed a degree and who wish to deepen their understanding of the key aspects of public sector management. The curriculum is focused on key areas of policy development, public sector finance, collaborative governance, intergovernmental affairs, program evaluation, e-government, and administrative law. A special capstone course focuses on the nature and style of leadership in the public sector. PhD IN POLICY STUDIES The PhD in Policy Studies, which launched in Fall 2009, is Canada’s first and only interdisciplinary doctoral program offering students the opportunity to study in three fields: Social Policy; Immigration, Settlement and Diaspora Policies; and Public Policy and Administration. Societal need for policy research has grown in response to the realities of the knowledge economy and the complex policy challenges facing communities, cities, regions, nations and the world. While policy studies as an area of study has found its disciplinary home in political science, policy research requires an understanding of the historical, cultural, political, institutional, geographic and economic aspects that frame policy fields. Traditional policy fields are increasingly interconnected, have domestic and international dimensions and involve policy actors from the public, non-profit and private sectors. These innate features of public policy require interdisciplinary knowledge and research collaboration across disciplinary boundaries. This interdisciplinary program is designed to prepare a new generation of researchers for positions in academe and the public, non-profit and private sectors at the local, regional, national and international levels. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education, an Interdisciplinary Certificate in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Management. It is the first undergraduate university certificate program in nonprofit sector management in Canada .
