CONGRATULATIONS
- to Dr. Tracey Raney, who was awarded the 2013 Jill Vickers Prize for her paper entitled “Leaving Parliament: Gender and Exit in the Ontario Legislature.” The prize was announced, and the plaque presented, at the President’s Dinner of the Canadian Political Science Association Annual Conference (part of the Congress of Humanities and Social Sciences) in Victoria, BC on 05 June 2013. The Jill Vickers Prize was established in 2004 in honour of Professor Jill Vickers, an activist and a leader in Canadian feminist scholarship, and the author of numerous books and articles in the fields of feminist political science, epistemology and interdisciplinary methodology, feminist theory and movements for change, and is awarded annually to the author or authors of the best paper presented, in English or French, at the annual conference of the Canadian Political Science Association on the topic of gender and politics.

- Ontario Public Service (OPS) Fellow
- The Department welcomes Susan Charendoff as the second OPS Fellow to be placed at Ryerson. As Director of the Civil Policy and Programs Branch, Court Services Division, Ministry of Attorney General, Ms. Charendoff has played a lead role in a number of significant civil justice reform initiatives, including Small Claims Court reforms, the introduction of mandatory mediation into the civil justice system, and reforms to streamline the civil discovery process. With her 23 years of public service experience, she has gained expertise in all phases of legal and operational policy development, program design, implementation and evaluation. Her history as a seasoned executive, leading change through complex programs and projects, will serve her well during her Fellowship at Ryerson. Ms. Charendoff holds an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School and a B.A. from York University. She will be in the Department regularly throughout the 2013-14 academic year, located in JOR725. Susan Charendoff replaces Shirley Phillips (Assistant Deputy Minister, Planning and Operations Division, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport), who served as the first OPS Fellow at Ryerson (from July 2012 through September 2013). The Department thanks Shirley for her many contributions during that time.

- Penn State Erie (The Behrend College)
- A number of Penn State students come to Toronto in alternate years to take a course co-taught by Dr. Gregory Inwood (Ryerson) and Dr. Robert Speel (Penn State). For Ryerson students, the course is POG417 (Canadian-American Relations) and, for Penn State students, the course is PL SC 299/499 (North American Politics). Click here for details and photos.
- Public Servant in Residence
- The Department is delighted to have Joan Andrew in the Department as Distinguished Public Servant in Residence since June 2010. An experienced public servant, Ms. Andrew brings to the Department a wide range of skills and contacts of enormous benefit to students in the Policy Studies PhD program, the Public Policy and Administration MA program, and both undergraduate programs. She is in the Department two-days each week and is located in JOR707.

- Jack Layton Lecture
- The inaugural lecture was delivered, on Thursday 20 September 2012, by Charles Taylor, Professor Emeritus at McGill with whom Jack studied as an undergraduate. Taylor’s lecture , delivered to a capacity house in the Ryerson Theatre, was titled: “Reimagining, Restoring and Reclaiming Democracy.” Click here for more.
- Phyllis Clarke Memorial Lecture

The Phyllis Clarke Memorial Lecture is held annually, usually in March, to honour the memory of Phyllis Clarke, a member of the Department from 1977 until her death in 1988.
