Minors and Professional Development Opportunities

As a Public Administration & Governance student at Ryerson, you are required to select a number of professionally-related courses from a Table that provides you with considerable choice. If you choose carefully, you can earn a Minor while also satisfying the professionally-related requirements for your Public Administration & Governance degree. Here’s how.

  • Review the Minors available.
  • Identify any Minors you find interesting and the configuration of courses required to satisfy their requirements
  • Compare the Minor requirements with the professionally-related requirements of your program as shown in Table I. If enough of the courses required to meet the requirements of the Minor appear on the Professionally-Related Table of your program, you need simply ensure that you take the courses that appear in both places.

Please note that courses listed as components of each Minor are not necessarily "Professionally-Related Electives” for students of Public Administration and Governance. Such courses would count towards the Minor, but would not count as professionally-related courses in your programme. Thus, it is very important to cross-reference carefully the component courses of the desired Minor with the Professionally-Related Table of your program.

The following Minors should be readily available to students of Public Administration & Governance:

If all of the courses necessary to satisfy the requirements of a Minor you find interesting do not appear on the Professionally-Related Table of your program, it does not necessarily mean that you cannot complete the Minor.

  • According to the Minors Policy of Ryerson University, you may pursue any Minor if “at least one-half of the Minor’s courses [are] included in the student’s program.” So if at least three (3) courses required by the Minor are in the Professionally-Related Table of your program, you can probably complete the Minor – but you should consult the Department of Politics and Public Administration before proceeding. [This would apply, for example, to the Child and Youth Services minor].

Students may also complete the (CE) Certificate in Food Security

Students may also complete the (CE) Certificate in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Management but may NOT complete both a Minor and the Certificate

*For course availability, consult RAMSS. Courses available in the evening may only be available through Continuing Education. Such courses have a “C” prefix (i.e. “ACC 100” becomes “CACC100”).
