General Overview

Designed for public sector managers, administrative officers, front-line service providers, policy analysts and those preparing for employment and advancement in federal, provincial or municipal government; social service agencies and other public or non-profit organizations, the program will allow you to:

  • acquire an awareness of the political forces that shape public policy and administration

  • gain an understanding of the political and public environment in which public service professionals work.

  • develop analytical, administrative, managerial, and communications skills that are directly applicable to your area of public administration. Graduates are recognized as well-prepared and qualified for post-graduate work and some move on to graduate studies in public administration, political science, law, public policy and business administration. The Ryerson Department of Politics and Public Administration is also a member of the Canadian Association of Programs in Public Administration, an affiliate of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada.

Program Features

  • Part-time study means you can continue your education at your own pace while working full-time.

  • Convenient locations and times enable you to take courses at Ryerson, or other locations. Some courses are also available in intensive mode or through correspondence. Most courses are offered during the fall and winter semesters. Students also have access to some courses in the spring and summer terms.

  • Flexible options allow you to plan your own course of study around career and home commitments.

  • A specialised curriculum has been designed, in partnership with the Office of the (Ontario) Fire Marshal (OFM) and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC), for fire services personnel working in the public and para-public sectors. Week-long, intensive mode courses are offered so fire service professionals can work towards earning a Certificate, Advanced Certificate or Degree (BA) in Public Administration and Governance. The first two levels of the program are offered on-site at the Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst.

  • A specialised curriculum has been designed, in partnership with the First Nations Technical Institute (FNTI) for First Nations administrators. Courses are offered in intensive mode, usually in two sessions and two locations per course, on location in Aboriginal communities. Students are able to earn a Certificate, Advanced Certificate, or Degree (BA) in Public Administration and Governance.

  • Small classes provide an opportunity for students to enjoy individual attention and assistance.

  • A balance of practical skills and theoretical knowledge provide a current and relevant basis for career development. Students are encouraged to integrate work experience into course work and class discussions.

  • An interesting mix of students from different government ministries, agencies, and jobs, encourages class discussions which reflect a rich diversity of experiences and expertise.

  • Experienced and knowledgeable faculty have a wide range of academic expertise and practical experience, as well as an awareness of the needs of part-time learners.

  • Returning to the classroom is made easier by sensitive and experienced teachers who create a friendly, flexible learning environment. As well, students are assigned faculty mentors who offer guidance. The university also offers support and workshops in essay writing and effective study skills.
