Choose courses applicable to your degree program

Learn about the purpose, content, and structure of the part-time program leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration and Governance by exploring the links (especially "Program" and "Curriculum") in the LH menu. Note that the program consists of three levels:

  • Level 1: Certificate
  • Level 2: Advanced Certificate
  • Level 3: Degree

The checklists linked from this page are designed to assist students in two ways:

  1. Column A (“Registration Guide”) guides the choice of courses that “fit” the requirements of the Public Administration and Governance academic program; while
  2. Column B (“Self-Audit Checklist”) tracks how and when each program requirement is satisfied (i.e., by taking the prescribed course, by transfer credit, or by course substitution), and the grade achieved.

Note that all courses in the Public Administration and Governance program have 3 hours per week of class time, although some may be configured to have 2 hours of lecture per week and a 1 hour tutorial. Tutorials are, in all cases, part of the course requirement, and attendance is NOT optional. Descriptions, dates and times can be viewed on RAMSS.

In the Public Administration and Governance program, all courses are offered at night (usually from 6:30 to 9:30 pm). While some Level I Professional courses – and most Professionally-Related and Liberal Studies electives – are available in day offering, upper level professional courses are never offered in day sections. Moreover, not all professional courses are offered every year.

As a result of the factors explained above, it is advisable to develop a long-range plan for course selection. To create such a plan, consult:

Using these three documents, figure out which courses you want to take in which semester. When selecting Liberal Studies electives, be sure to pay attention to the restrictions. Then, use the checklists that follow to prioritize your elective choices, to “map” your program requirements and to record when and how you satisfy the program requirements. The checklists are in machine-fillable MS-Excel format, so you can keep an electronic record and add to the RH column as you satisfy program requirements.

You should be able to register yourself in courses using RAMSS (See Step 2). Do not register in Continuing Education sections of Program (i.e., CPOG, CPOL, or CPPA) courses! Should you encounter difficulty in registering, please contact the Program Administrator, who will be pleased to assist you if:

  • you have a valid Matrix account and have tried to register yourself;
  • you are aware of which courses are offered in the term in which you want to register (see link above);
  • you have printed out the following checklists and have done your own “Self-Audit” so that you know which program requirements remain to be satisfied; and
  • you have identified a number of available choices in the Professionally-Related and/or Liberal Studies category.

Do not contact the Program Administrator until the above conditions have been satisfied!

Use the checklist that follows to “map” your course requirements.

Register for classes using RAMSS

To Register in Classes:

From the RAMSS tab within the http://my.ryerson.ca (Blackboard) website select the Class Enrollment / Course Intention link. Select the term/semester (Fall or Winter) and then select the add classes link. You will be able to find and add classes to your schedule.

Add Classes:

This option will allow you to find and register for/add classes to your schedule. Note that space is limited in many classes; if no space is available you can opt to join the waiting list for the class.

Drop Classes:

This option will allow you to remove a class from your schedule.

There may be both financial and/or academic penalties if you drop a class after it has begun. It is possible to drop a class and receive a full/partial refund before a specific date. It is also possible to drop a class and receive no grade before a specific date (particularly if you are not doing well in the class).

Please consult the significant dates section of the current Undergraduate Calendar for details.

Swap Classes:

Swapping a class will allow you to replace one class with another.  Swap preserves your original enrolment until the swap is successful.  If the class with which you want to swap is unavailable, your original class enrolment will be preserved.  If the swap is successful, you will be dropped from the original class.
