    The ACC sponsors an annual essay contest for current graduate and undergraduate students interested in NATO.  Follow links for topics, guidelines, and prizes.

  • Canadian Study of Parliament Group
    National Essay Competition
    • 5000 words (max) on any subject matter broadly relating to parliament, legislatures or legislators

  • Geoff Weller Memorial Prize [Canadian Association of Security and Intelligence Studies (CASIS)]
    • Page limit: 30 pages (undergraduate); 40 pages (graduate) on a subject dealing with intelligence, security, or law enforcement
    • Prize: combination of cash and travel, accommodation and conference registration to present the paper at the annual CASIS conference

  • Municipal Education and Research Foundation (MERF) Local Government Research Paper Award The Municipal Education and Research Foundation (MERF) sponsors annual awards to current students in diploma or degree-granting programs, for outstanding research papers on the subject of municipal administration and/ or management. The awards will be judged on technical competence, significance of findings, originality and clarity of expression.

  • Ethnicity and Democratic Governance (EDG) Project is a five-year Major Collaborative Research Initiative funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Its central research question is "How can societies respond to the opportunities and challenges raised by ethnic, linguistic, religious, and cultural differences, and do so in ways that promote democracy, social justice, peace and stability?" The Student Research Network (SRN) is a key component of the Ethnicity and Democratic Governance project's student development strategy, and is open to post-secondary students worldwide.

INTERNSHIPS/PLACEMENTS

  • Centre international d’études pédagogiques (CIEP)
    Assistant Exchange Program
    (for further details see “International Study” above)
  • Coady International Institute offers, through its “Youth in Partnership” a series of international internships. The program is open to:
    • recent university/college graduates or about to graduate
    • currently unemployed or under-employed
    • between 19 and 30 years of age;
    • Canadian citizens or have permanent residents eligibility to work in Canada;
    • first time participants in the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES)
  • Council of the Federation Youth Internship Program
    Aimed at encouraging young Canadians to participate more actively in public policy development, public service, government and political life
  • Émigré Memorial German Internship Program (EMGIP)
    • EMGIP – Bundestag Internship offers internship opportunities for US and Canadian students in the German parliament, the Bundestag. The internships are two months long in positions matching the student’s interest and experience. Interns will be placed with their preferred Fraktion, Ausschuss, with individual members of the Bundestag and their offices. In addition to contributing to the respective offices, interns have the opportunity to study legislative and administrative procedures in the German parliament.
    • EMGIP – German State Parliaments is a fellowship program that provides American and Canadian students the opportunity to intern at the Landtage - German State Parliaments. This is a great opportunity for individuals hoping to pursue careers at a regional level of government in the US or Canada, or who are interested in specific policy issues such as the environment, education and/or healthcare. Participants on the program gain practical work experience with a state parliament, utilize their German skills and experience German culture firsthand.

    • CIDA International Youth Internship Program
    • The International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) is an employment program for young Canadians between the ages of 19-30. Post-secondary graduates may be eligible to work in a developing country and contribute to Canada’s international development goals. Not only will this experience contribute to personal and professional growth, your sponsor organization will lend a helping hand in your search for employment once your internship ends.
  • Hansard Scholars Programme
    Study British politics at the London School of Economics and do an internship in Parliament, Government or with a lobbying group, media organization or charity.
  • MASS LBP Internship Program is open to undergraduate students and recent graduates each season. Internships typically last from 4 to 8 weeks and are full-time, although part-time placements will be considered in exceptional circumstances. Interns can expect to gain valuable insight on effective public consultation techniques and develop their research and project design and management skills.

  • Rooftops Canada/Abri International
    operates a six-month internship program – International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) – as part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy, facilitated by the Canadian International Development Agency’s Youth Action Division.  Interns work with partner organizations in Chile, South Africa, Cameroon, Egypt, and India. To be eligible, candidates must have graduated from college or university and be between the ages of 19 and 30. We need candidates with backgrounds in planning, architecture, economic development, community development, international development, women’s studies, and/or cooperatives.

  • Bill 7 Award
    Honours queer history by supporting queer students.
    The Bill 7 Award is a registered charitable trust that awards scholarships to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer and 2-spirited students, resident in Ontario and in financial need in any post-secondary institution in Ontario, attaining their first degree.

  • Black Business and Professional Association Scholarships
    The Black Business and Professional Association offers a number of scholarships in several categories
    • Legacy Scholarships are established in the name of Black Canadians who enriched Canada with their contributions in the arts, the professions, science, business, technology, politics and other areas of endeavour.  Value = $2,000 except the Harry Jerome Scholarship, which is $5,000.
    • First Generation Scholarships of $1,000.00 to $2,000.00 are available to students whose parents have not participated in post-secondary education studies.
    • Four Leaders of Tomorrow scholarships valued at $2,000 each are available to students from high priority neighbourhoods in the Greater Toronto Area who are attending an accredited Canadian university or college.

  • Sauvé Scholars Program
    The Sauvé Scholars Program – launched in 2003 by the Jeanne Sauvé Foundation which was established by the late Governor General, the Right Honourable Jeanne Sauvé – is a unique opportunity for 12-14 young leaders under the age of 30 from around the world to spend the academic year in Montreal for a period of research, reflection, personal and professional development.  Applicants must have completed undergraduate education by 31 July, prior to taking up a position.
