Biography:
I never took a course on communications in my life, but I wish I had, because I've had to learn by trial and error, mostly error. It takes a lot longer, and you suffer more.
I studied English and Classics as an undergraduate, and I completed a graduate business degree at University of Toronto for survival. I've taught communication at Ryerson, strictly part-time, since 1989. I've learned a lot by teaching, and I hope you learn a lot by taking the course.
Primarily I work as a financial planner. Among other things that means I have to communicate a lot, mostly with clients. I write letters, memos, emails and reports. Lots of them. I conduct live presentations to groups of people, because sometimes that's the only way to communicate. When you communicate successfully, it's really satisfying. When you fail to communicate well, it always means trouble. On a daily basis I have to practice what I preach to students.
