Pedestrianizing Gould Street
Project
On February 6, 2012, Toronto city council voted to create a permanent pedestrian zone in the middle of the Ryerson campus. The zone -- which runs along Gould Street from O'Keefe Lane to Bond Street, and includes a part of Victoria Street -- is now called Ryerson Square.
The vote comes after years of proposals and campaigns by the Ryerson community and the university. It was a major project of the Ryerson Student Union (RSU). The goal was to put "people first," in line with the Master Plan which describes Gould St. as the university's "public realm spine."
Opening Gould to pedestrian traffic connects many elements at the heart of the Ryerson campus, including its beautification strategy, the School of Image Arts/Ryerson Image Centre project, a summer farmers' market, and bike storage. It's at the centre of a web of transformation for the campus.
Adding to the atmosphere will be a street-level cafe, with patio, in the School of Image Arts and Ryerson Image Centre. Planters and street furniture have been installed and Lake Devo has been refilled with water.
