The Office of the Vice-Provost Students (OVPS) actively supports Ryerson’s academic plan, Our Time to Lead, and its strategic priority of enabling greater student engagement and success through exceptional experiences. 

With a focus on responsiveness and empathy, the vice-provost, students oversees a portfolio of 300 employees who work across three core areas: The Office of the Registrar, and Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment; Athletics and Recreation; and Student Affairs which includes health and wellness, student learning support, career services, housing, and student life. The OVPS also has responsibility for student conduct and dispute resolution, and sexual violence support and education. 

Heather Lane Vetere

Heather Lane Vetere joined Ryerson as vice-provost, students in 2008 and during that time has overseen transformation across the portfolio including the opening of the ServiceHub, a one-stop shop for students to ask all of their academic administrative questions; the consolidation of student learning supports to one centralized location in the university’s award-winning Student Learning Centre; and the growth of athletics and recreation.

Previously, Heather worked as the director of student housing at the University of Guelph and as dean of students at Victoria College in the University of Toronto. She is a former president of the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services, and was the recipient of their 2012 Award of Honour.

Heather holds a doctorate in higher education administration and student affairs from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

In 2014, Heather embarked upon a unique project that has garnered recognition across the sector called “The In Their Shoes Project.” By joining a fourth-year fashion design class, and the women’s basketball team, she has been able to develop a greater understanding of experiences of specific groups of students at Ryerson. Areas of responsibility

 

  • Student Affairs 
    This support network helps students make a successful transition to university, develop career-related skills, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  • Registrar's Office
    The Office of the Registrar provides a broad range of academic support services concerning student recruitment, admissions, enrolment, grading, promotion and graduation assessment. This office also develops course and exam schedules.

  • Athletics and Recreation
    This unit is responsible for varsity and intramural sports programs, and for Ryerson’s Recreation and Athletics Centre (RAC) and Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC).

  • Sexual Violence Support and Education
    This office leads the university-wide response to supporting survivors of sexual violence and fostering a consent comes first culture through education campaigns.

  • Student Conduct Office
    This office administers the student code of non-academic conduct, and provides leadership to faculty, staff and students concerned about student behaviour and disruptive conduct.
