Academic Plan Overview

Academic Plan Overview

Shaping our Future puts forward five priorities that address key areas of significance to the university, and 25 strategies to guide the Ryerson community in its initiatives.

Breadth of vision

Ryerson’s educational goals coexist with strategic research priorities, space allocation and building programs, staff resources, technological advances, and funding opportunities. Ryerson is committed to integrative planning.

Ryerson values the diversity found among its students, faculty, and programs. Furthermore, Ryerson is unique in Canada for 1) integrating theoretical and experiential learning; and 2) building long-lasting relationships with external communities in the arts, business, government, and industry.

Academic Plan

In 2008, Senate approved a five-year Academic Plan that will guide the university’s academic development through 2013. Entitled Shaping Our Future, this plan consists of several overarching priorities. Each element addresses an area of key significance to the University.

The Academic Plan arose from extensive consultation with faculty, students, staff, and other constituents. Shaping Our Future also coalesces with priorities inscribed in Ryerson’s Quality Agenda, Academic Mission, and Master Plan.

The Academic Plan takes into account such issues as student engagement, directions in research, academic structures, partnerships with industry and the arts, and input from government. It looks ahead to Ryerson’s reputation and impact locally, nationally, and globally.

Ryerson’s Academic Plan will ensure a far-reaching coordination of units, resources, vision, and funding. It does not aim to foresee all the changes that might affect the University. Instead, the plan embeds goals that will inform decisions. As a result, the Academic Plan enables Ryerson to adapt to change in ways that are integrative, thoughtful, and in keeping with the university’s Quality Agenda.
