Message from the Chair

Dr. Martin M. Antony, PhD

Welcome to the Department of Psychology at TMU!  Over the past decade, the department has undergone a period of unprecedented growth.  As one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Arts — an integral contributor to the education of approximately 34,000 undergraduate and graduate students — we have built on our history by pursuing new initiatives for the 21st century. In the past decade, we launched BA, MA, and PhD programs, hired 25 new full-time faculty members from across North America, Europe, and Asia, and built a new Research and Training Centre with more than 30 dedicated laboratories. We also have certificates in Psychology and in Mental Health and Addictions offered through The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.

Our faculty currently hold over $32 million (more than $11 million as principal or coprincipal investigator) in external grants from CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, NIH, and other sources. In 2011, we partnered with St. Michael's Hospital to establish a Psychology Training Clinic, and in 2012 we launched the Institute for Stress and Wellbeing Research (over $1 million in research tools and infrastructure), which includes the Harry Rosen Research Commons.

Today, the Department of Psychology has 32 full-time faculty, 5 staff, over 600 full-time undergraduate students, over 100 graduate students across our MA and PhD programs, and 6 postdoctoral fellows.

All Psychology programs incorporate TMU’s unique mission of advancing knowledge with a socially relevant curriculum that balances theory and practice — but programs also innovate beyond this mandate. At TMU, Psychology comes alive with challenging and integrative studies that prepare students for a wide range of careers and postgraduate opportunities. A pursuit of highest quality is the hallmark of all Psychology programs: in each year since the launch of our BA program in Psychology, we have received over 3,000 applicants for a coveted 135 seats. Year after year, undergraduate students have made Psychology one of TMU’s most sought after programs, based on first-choice applications. Ranked among the top at TMU in incoming GPA, our MA and PhD Psychology students distinguish themselves with their research and external funding awards totaling over $1 million per year. They enjoy hands-on involvement with leading researchers in customized research labs. Taking advantage of TMU's central location in a major metropolitan city, graduate students also benefit from a wide choice of clinical and research placements in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Department of Psychology at TMUdelivers highly innovative basic, social, and health science research and is recognized nationally as a department on the move. We are proud of our contributions to student training and advancement, science, and discovery.
