Dr. Martin Antony named new Chair of Psychology

Faculty of Arts is very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Martin Antony as Chair of the Department of Psychology for 5 years effective August 1st, 2011.
Dr. Antony came to Ryerson in 2006 as a full professor in the Department of Psychology. Previously, he was professor (and before that, associate professor) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University (1998-2006), and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto (1994-1998). Dr. Antony received his BSc in Psychology from the University of Toronto (1987), and his PhD in Psychology from the University at Albany, State University of New York (1994).
Dr. Antony is internationally recognized for his research in the area of anxiety disorders and their treatment. He has published 28 books and more than 150 scientific articles and book chapters in the areas of cognitive behaviour therapy, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, phobias, and perfectionism. He currently holds grant funding from CIHR, SSHRC, and several other agencies. In 2009-2010, Dr. Antony was President of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), and he recently finished a 3-year term on the CPA Board of Directors. Previously, he was psychologist-in-chief, founding director of the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre, and founding director of the Clinical Psychology Residency Program at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.
At Ryerson University, Dr. Antony served for 4 years as the founding director of the MA and PhD programs in psychology, and has also served on the Senate, and numerous committees within the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts, and the University. He has received both SRC and Service Awards for his contributions while at Ryerson, as well as numerous national and international awards for his roles in research and training. He is a fellow of both the Canadian and American Psychological Associations. Dr. Antony is looking forward to steering the continued rapid evolution of the Department of Psychology at this critical point in its development.
