On behalf of Psychology, I am pleased to welcome Dr. Janice Kuo and Dr. Lili Ma to our department. We are very excited to have them and I hope you'll take a read of their biographical sketches provided in the links below. I also hope that you all will join me in welcoming Janice and Lili.

I am also proud to report that Janice and Lili represent the 20th and 21st permanent hires since 2005 for a full-time faculty complement of 31 today, further evidence of the department's ascent.

Dr. Janice Kuo

The Department of Psychology is pleased to announce that DR. JANICE KUO will be joining the department as an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) on August 1, 2010.

Dr. Kuo completed her BA at the University of California (Los Angeles) and her MA and PhD at the University of Washington in 2007, specializing in Clinical Psychology. Since completing her APA-accredited internship at the Department of Veteran Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System in 2007, she has held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine and the National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Dr. Kuo's research program explores emotion reactivity and regulation in borderline personality disorder (BPD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and non-clinical samples. Her treatment-based research is in the area of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Cognitive-Processing Therapy (CPT). Committed to translating basic science research to clinical applications, Dr. Kuo has published 10 scholarly articles, many of which appeared in the top journals in the field including Journal of Abnormal Psychology; Brain, Behaviour, and Immunity; Depression and Anxiety; Psychological Medicine; Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease; International Journal of Eating Disorders and others. She also has 2 new manuscripts currently under review and has disseminated her research widely in the US and Europe. Her unique focus on Dialectical Behavior Therapy, a field pioneered by Dr. Kuo's supervisor, Dr. Marsha Linehan, adds an important new dimension to the department's development of an Institute for Stress, Health, and Intervention. As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Kuo has already received research funding from the prestigious National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Janice is keen to be joining our Psychology department and to begin building her emotion regulation lab in the PRTC. As she sums it up: "I am so excited to be part the Ryerson faculty. I feel incredibly lucky to be joining a group of such talented - and kind - scientists and am I looking forward to the upcoming years of collaboration!"
