Welcome to the Department of Psychology at Ryerson University, located in the heart of downtown Toronto. Modern and innovative, ours is the fastest growing psychology department in Canada, and is home to dynamic scholars, award-winning teachers, and some of the university’s top students.
As one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Arts—an integral contributor to the education of approximately 29,000 undergraduate and graduate students—we have built on our history by pursuing new initiatives for 21st century. In the past five years, we have launched BA, MA, and PhD programs, hired 23 new full-time faculty members from across North America and Europe, built a new Research and Training Centre with 28 research laboratories, and, in 2009, hired a Professor of Distinction in Psychiatry. In 2005 we added a new certificate in Mental Health and Addictions offered through The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. Partnering with the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, Sunnybrook Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Ontario Stroke Region and Network, and the Chang School, we launched in 2009 an Interprofessional Certificate in Advanced Neuroscience-Stroke Care—the first program of its kind in Canada. Not standing still, a department team is currently developing a new post-graduate certificate for mental health practitioners, details to follow shortly.
Our faculty hold over 6 million dollars in externally awarded grants from CIHR, Lance Armstrong, NIH, NSERC, SSHRC, and various ministries in the Province of Ontario. In 2010, we partnered with St. Michael's Hospital to establish a Clinical Psychology Training Clinic and in 2012, we hope to launch the Institute for Stress and Wellbeing Research (over $1 million committed for research tools and infrastructure).
Today, the Department of Psychology has 30 full-time faculty, four staff, 518 full-time undergraduate students and 85 graduate students (32 MA; 53 PhD).
All Psychology programs incorporate Ryerson’s unique mission of advancing knowledge with a socially relevant curriculum that balances theory and practice—but programs also innovate beyond this mandate. At Ryerson Psychology comes alive with challenging and integrative studies that prepare students for a wide range of careers and post-graduate opportunities. A pursuit of highest quality is the hallmark of all Psychology programs: in each of the past six years, Psychology has received over 3,000 applicants to our BA program (3,332 for 2011-12) for a coveted 130 seats. Over the past four years, undergraduate students have made Psychology the #1 program choice in the Faculty of Arts with year over year increases in first-choice applications. Ranked first at Ryerson in incoming GPA, our MA and PhD Psychology students are distinguishing themselves with their research and external funding awards totaling over 1.3 million for the 2011-12 academic year. They enjoy hands-on involvement with leading researchers in newly-built research labs. Taking advantage of Ryerson's central location in a major metropolitan city, graduate students also benefit from a wide choice of clinical and research placements in the Greater Toronto Area.
