In this age of mass culture and new media technologies, the creative industries are an important generator of jobs and growth in Canada’s economy. Design, creative expression, and the cultural industries constitute one of Ryerson’s strongest research areas. Ryerson attracts talented researchers and cultural producers who work closely with organizations within the city and around the world. Ryerson’s faculty are actively involved in a diverse range of projects such as designing clothing and accessories for breast cancer survivors, studying the eye movements of viewers of 3D cinema, and investigating media coverage of child care issues.

The new Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) is poised to become an international centre of excellence. The RIC is now home to the Black Star Collection, which was given to Ryerson University by an anonymous donor in 2005 and consists of more than a quarter million historical photographs including iconic images of JFK, Martin Luther King, and Marilyn Monroe. The collection is an important historical archive and visual record of the evolution of picture journalism throughout the twentieth century.
