Ryerson is Canada's comprehensive innovation university.  Grounded solidly in leading edge research and experiential learning, Ryerson faculty and students work with industry and community partners to find real-world solutions to real-world problems.

Ryerson’s mission is to foster research and teaching with direct connections to societal need, whether in the economic or social realm. As we have grown to become a comprehensive research university – with a burgeoning Graduate Studies program that has added 39 masters’ programs and 13 PhD programs in the last decade alone – we have strengthened our experiential learning programs (co-ops, internships, exchanges, clinical placements, and more) and provided innovative approaches to improving accessibility.

Innovation is the lifeblood of Ryerson where faculty and students work with partners to develop new technologies, services, and processes, and create new companies and social enterprises. Innovations developed by Ryerson researchers help build Canadian businesses, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for Canadians.

Innovation at Ryerson is growing through its internationally acclaimed ‘zone’ model. The Digital Media Zone (DMZ) gives student researchers and entrepreneurs access to overhead, business services, and a rich network of contacts, accelerating product launches and contributing to Canada’s increasing success in the digital economy.  Additionally, Ryerson is set to introduce its water and green zones.

Our faculty pursues innovation across themes, which include biomedical engineering, digital media, health and well-being, aerospace engineering, design, creative expression, cultural industries, civil society, and energy, sustainability, and the environment. Ryerson’s commitment to relevant research sharpens our focus on solving real problems and increases the competitiveness of Canadian industries.

Ryerson researchers collaborate across disciplines and sectors.  For example, the application of telecommunications technologies (such as optical fibres and lasers) to biomedical engineering has allowed researchers at Ryerson to develop new techniques for imaging normal and cancerous tissues. The application of medical research to abrasive jet technology (the use of microscopic nozzles to blast tiny streams of abrasives for delicate etching, shaping, and carving) has resulted in new processes used to develop medical devices. Additionally, one of Ryerson’s mechanical engineers was among the first in Canada to explore the use of sustainable materials in medical applications, creating eco-friendly and long-lasting bone substitutes for joint replacements.
