Partnering to Innovate

Ryerson’s researchers are known for being able to solve practical problems using collaborative research methods. We partner with industry, government, and not-for-profit organizations to attract approximately $13 million annually from partners.

Ryerson has more than 150 innovative research centres, institutes, and labs in a wide-range of disciplines. We also partner to form new centres of innovation. A collaboration between Hydro One, the Ontario Power Authority, and Toronto Hydro resulted in the formation of the Centre for Urban Energy (CUE). CUE is a unique, multi-disciplinary collaboration that conducts basic and applied research to find the most cost-effective and sustainable ways of producing energy in Canada with a focus on smart grid technology, alternative fuels, conservation, and energy demand management.

Ryerson is quickly becoming world-renowned for its approach to advancing innovation. In particular, Ryerson is recognized for the creation of its innovation ‘zones’. These zones bring together faculty, students, and industry partners to solve research problems, providing opportunities for students to learn by working with industry clients or by creating their own companies. Ryerson’s Digital Media Zone has helped more than 250 innovators to incubate and/or accelerate 51 start-ups and launch 94 projects. Institutions in Brazil, India, and Israel have inquired about the possibility of establishing similar initiatives in their countries.

Ryerson is also a leader among universities in using research and innovation to link young talent with relevant partners in sectors crucial to the Canadian economy. The Ryerson Institute for Aerospace Design and Innovation (RIADI) brings aerospace engineering students to industry to work on research and development projects, facilitating collaborations that result in the training of highly qualified workers and innovative new aerospace designs. Partner companies include Bombardier Aerospace, Pratt and Whitney Canada, Goodrich, Magellan Aerospace, and Safran Electronics Canada.

Partnering to innovate with Ryerson will give your organization a competitive edge. The Office of the Vice President, Research and Innovation is committed to ensuring that its research partners in industry, government, and not-for-profit organizations stay relevant, competitive, and innovative.
