IZABELLA PRUSKA-OLDENHOF: THE RELICS OF LUMEN

Image caption: Unknown photographer, NASA Agency, Untitled [Aviation / Apollo 11-Crew Returns Home], n.d., gelatin silver print. BS.2005.237242/ 144-499. The Black Star Collection, Ryerson Image Centre.

Displayed on the Salah J. Bachir New Media Wall, this newly-commissioned video by Canadian experimental filmmaker Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof weaves together representations of night skies with images of people in transit captured over the last century, linking the displacement of people to celestial passages through space. Weaving together source material from Ryerson University’s Black Star Collection of photo-reportage and astronomical photographs from the US government agency NASA, Pruska-Oldenhof uses these repositories as “archives of light,” creating an immersive environment of mosaics and composite collages.
