Join Emily McKibbon, Associate Curator and Collections Manager at the McLaren Art Centre, as she discusses the different aspects of Notman's portraiture as well as the multiple points of entry into this unusual group of family photographs.

Noon Time Collection Talk

March 16, 12 pm
Thierry Gervais: The Retouched Photograph

The development of software like Photoshop during the 1990s, along with the recent digital revolution have raised questions among viewers and readers regarding the integrity of the photographer and the credibility of photojournalism. However, news photographs, before reaching publication, have always been retouched or altered by the human hand. Join Thierry Gervais, Associate Professor and RIC Head of Research, for an interactive discussion on his long-term research project, which examines how the practice of retouching was an integral part of publishing news images in the analogue era. As Gervais proposes, a new approach to photojournalism must addresses photographic credibility as a multifaceted creation, not as a mechanical recording of reality.
