Charles Falzon appointed RTA chair

Charles Falzon
I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Charles Falzon as chair of the School of Radio and Television Arts (RTA) for a five-year term effective August 9, 2010.
As RTA chair, Charles will be responsible for the management of the School's academic and operational affairs and will work closely with faculty and staff in promoting research, scholarship and continued excellence of programming and related initiatives, including participation in interdisciplinary efforts both on and off campus. Charles will also work with the dean of the Faculty of Communication & Design (FCAD) and the School of RTA in developing academic and industry partnerships at national and international levels.
Originally an RTA graduate ('79), Charles also holds a master's degree in spirituality from Regis College at the University of Toronto ('06) and is currently completing an advanced degree in theology with a major in ethics at U of T.
Over the past 15 years, he has been a guest lecturer and an adjunct professor in the School of RTA, specializing in media business, marketing and media ethics.
In addition to his academic experience, Charles brings to FCAD and RTA a distinguished career in media. His professional experience covers a wide range of management activity, including the production of over 1,000 hours of award-winning television series and movies, distribution, marketing and publishing, as well as live events and brand development. Most recently, Charles has been the co-chairman of CCI Entertainment Limited, a leading independent production and distribution company in Toronto, releasing such successful titles as Ghost Trackers, Harry and His Bucketful of Dinosaurs and the feature mini-series for CBC, Iron Road. Previously, Charles was president of Gullane Entertainment PLC, a U.K.-based multinational public company, where he managed all areas of commercial activity. Among its large portfolios were Thomas the Tank Engine, Guinness World Records and Art Attack.
Beyond his professional career, Charles has been actively involved in numerous boards and advisory committees, including his work in media literacy as part of The Jesuit Communications Project. He was the founding chairman of the Canadian Film and Television Production Association and has served as a governor of the Banff Film Festival. He was inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the honour society of Jesuit Universities, and is a member of the Order of Malta.
Please join me in congratulating Charles Falzon in his new role as RTA chair and wishing him every success on this appointment.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Clive Vanderburgh for his dedication and leadership as interim RTA chair over the past year. We were incredibly honoured that Clive was able to work with us again during this transition period - bringing invaluable insight, humour and expertise.
