It was a memorable weekend for 40 of Ryerson’s Master of Business Administration students as they finished second at the 2013 MBA Games hosted by the DeGroote School of Business in Hamilton.

“I am so very proud that our students did well on all three dimensions of spirit, academics and athletics.  The teamwork displayed by our sports teams is the result of consistent practice together in the fall term, as are the wonderful results of the case teams,” says Kim Bates, director, MBA in the Management of Technology and information.

MBA students from across Canada have been competing in the MBA Games for more than 20 years. This year, 21 Canadian universities and more than 600 students took part in the weekend long competition. The games challenge teams to a series of academic, athletic and spirit competitions. Universities compete in four case competitions, four sports and several spirit events.

Ryerson’s Ted Rogers School of Management had a strong showing in the academic portion of the competition, making the finals in both the marketing and crisis management case competitions. The team won the Community Service Challenge by having the most hours served by students in helping charities during the fall term.

Ryerson also dominated the athletic competition, winning the athletic trophy. The team won bronze in both volleyball and dodge ball and went undefeated in floor hockey. “We won gold in floor hockey in a tremendous final game against Laval,” says Dale Carl, director of graduate students, Ted Rogers School of Management. “Daniel Freiman scored the golden goal in the last minute to win an incredibly tough match by 1-0, which was probably the highlight of the tournament.”

Overall, the Schulich School of Business finished first, with Ryerson finishing in second and Laval rounding out the top three.
