Ryerson applauds government for continuing to recognize importance of post-secondary education
Ryerson University applauds the Ontario government's continuing recognition of the importance of post-secondary education in the 2011-12 provincial budget, which will help create 60,000 additional student spaces for colleges and universities by 2015-16.
We look forward to working with the government regarding Ryerson's allocation in the near future.
The provincial budget announced yesterday reflects the expectations the university set in developing its own 2011-12 budget. The province's budget maintains the level of per student funding but at the same time provides additional support to accommodate increased numbers of students.
We are grateful that the province continues to recognize that students and post-secondary education are the gateways to the future success of Ontario. The investment announced yesterday is a real commitment to increase opportunities for students pursuing post-secondary education.
Applications to our university have soared, increasing 30 per cent over the past five years and establishing Ryerson as the most applied-to university in the province relative to spaces available. For September 2010 Ryerson received almost 67,500 undergraduate applications, about 10 times the number of spaces available.
Young people in colleges and universities hold the keys to success as a province and a country. We are pleased that the government has put a high priority on this investment.
