Fei Yuan appointed chair, Electrical and Computer Engineering

Fei Yuan is chair, Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective July 1.

I am pleased to inform you of the appointment of Fei Yuan, P.Eng., as chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective July 1, 2010.

Dr. Yuan joined the academic staff of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in July 1999, after receiving his PhD from the University of Waterloo. Prior to that , he was a lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Changzhou Institute of Technology, Jiangsu, China during 1985-1989, a visiting scholar at the Humber College of Applied Arts and Technology, and Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology, Sarnia, Ont. in 1989, and  a Controls Engineer with Paton Controls  Ltd., Sarnia, during 1989-1994. Dr. Yuan was awarded an early tenure and was promoted to associate professor in 2003 and full professor in 2008.

During 2002-2006, Dr. Yuan provided exemplary academic administrative leadership in his role as associate chair for undergraduate programs and faculty affairs and played an active role in the successful accreditation of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering programs from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board in 1996. He also served on numerous committees of Ryerson, FEAS, SGS and the Department including the university’s Academic Standards Committee, and has been Ryerson’s representative at CMC Microsystems, Kingston, Ontario since 2002.

Since joining Ryerson, Dr. Yuan has developed and taught three senior undergraduate courses, and four graduate courses. In addition, he has also been deeply engaged in fourth-year engineering design projects.

Dr. Yuan’s research achievements and contributions are indeed substantial and impressive. He is currently supervising one visiting professor, one research associate (doctoral level), two PhD students, three MASc students and a number of MEng students. Dr. Yuan’s research has been financially supported by CFI, NSERC, Micronet, CMC Microsystems and Ryerson University. He supervised the successful completion of 18 masters and one visiting professor. Many of his graduate students continue further studies at leading universities such as UCLA, McGill, Waterloo and McMaster or found employment in leading corporations such as Intel, AMD, Micron Technologies, RIM, GE, Gennum and LeCroy. Dr. Yuan is the author of CMOS Active Inductors and Transformers: Principle, Implementation and Applications (Springer, ’08), CMOS Current-mode Circuits for Data Communications (Springer, ’06), co-author of the book Computer Methods for Analysis of Mixed-mode Wwitching Circuits (Kluwer, 04) and is completing his fourth book, CMOS Circuits for Passive Wireless Microsystems (Springer, Aug. ’10). He is the author/co-author of 47 research papers in refereed journals, two book chapters and over 90 research papers in refereed conference proceedings. He serves as associate editor of the Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering and is on the editorial board of several internal journals. Dr. Yuan was awarded a Ryerson Research Chair in 2005, the FEAS Research Excellence Award in 2004, the doctoral scholarship (PGS-B) from NSERC during 1997-1998, and the Teaching Excellence Award from Changzhou Institute of Technology in 1988. Dr. Yuan is a senior member of IEEE and a registered professional engineer in Ontario.
