Gearing up for Science Rendezvous 2012

Are you a student, instructor, investigator, or staff member with a science component to your work? Would you like to share your love of science, engineering or technology with the community? If so, I would like you to know about Science Rendezvous, Ryerson's premier science, engineering and technology outreach event.

What is Science Rendezvous?
Science Rendezvous is an annual celebration, taking place on Saturday, May 12 this year. Ryerson is one of four founding university partners that got the ball rolling in 2008. This spring will be the fifth Rendezvous, and already the event has spread across Canada through the support of universities, hospitals and other science-based organisations and institutions.

Every year at Ryerson's Science Rendezvous, about 150 Ryerson faculty members, students and staff volunteer to provide the public with a taste of science. We develop science shows, hands-on activities and displays that engage and excite people. You don't have to be a hard-core scientist to participate. We have a "big tent" mentality and welcome ideas from all over the university. We also invite partners from outside Ryerson. Anyone can share their ideas and contribute to the energy of the event. If you don't have an idea, but would like to help out on someone else's idea, I encourage you to get involved.

A new venue
This year, Ryerson will host Science Rendezvous at Dundas Square on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The new venue is a terrific opportunity for us: This year our audience could be in the tens of thousands. The site is very much in demand; in fact, we are getting requests for space from the University of Toronto and York University. The new site will really put Ryerson in the spotlight. In fact, we will probably be the most attended site in Canada!

How to participate
We need volunteers who are enthusiastic about science, who can show the public the incredible work we do at Ryerson. I am very interested in exciting new ideas for the main square or the stage that will be of high quality and really "wow" the public.

We need to know as soon as possible who will be participating and what each group plans to do. If you are willing to contribute this year, please advise Rose Tam at extension 4224 or rosetam@ryerson.ca. If you would like to discuss an idea you have or just find out more, you can email me at dheyd@gwemail.ryerson.ca or call me at extension 7921. We would love to hear from you.
