Constance L. Sugiyama
Constance L. Sugiyama, one of Canada's leading corporate lawyers and former Deputy Chair and Partner of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP has joined Ryerson University as a distinguished visiting scholar in the Ryerson Law Research Centre for a two-year term.
"Ryerson is honoured to have such a distinguished lawyer join our academic community," said Alan Shepard, provost and vice president academic. "Her leadership, business expertise and commitment to corporate social responsibility are valuable assets that will benefit our students and faculty as we continue to enhance our presence in the field of law and legal education."
As a visiting scholar, Sugiyama will contribute her extensive experience to provide insights and guidance into issues affecting the legal profession and legal research and education. During her term, she will conduct guest lectures, lead roundtable discussions, chair conferences organized by Ryerson's Law Research Centre and act as an advisor to the Centre as part of its research activities.
Launched in the fall of 2009, the Law Centre is fostering new and innovative research into law and exploring the many ways in which issues of law and justice are impacting our world.

In addition to her prominent legal career, Sugiyama has extensive experience serving on many public and private sector boards and advisory committees, including among others, the Hospital for Sick Children where she served as Chair (2008-2011) and as a Trustee (2002-2011), Canada Health Infoway, where she currently serves as Vice Chair, The Toronto International Film Festival Group, SickKids Foundation, LuminaTO, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, and Women in Capital Markets, of which she was a founding director and for which she currently serves on the Advisory Council.
Over her 35 years in practice, Sugiyama has been recognized as a leading Canadian corporate and M&A lawyer by, among others, Lexpert, Best Lawyers and Chambers Global. She has also been recognized for her direction and professional excellence by Women in Capital Markets ("WCM Award for Leadership" 2009), for her efforts in advancing the economic empowerment of women by the International Alliance for Women ("Difference 100 Award" 2010), and in both 2009 and 2011, was named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women's Executive Network.
