Biography:
Akua Benjamin has been in social work her for most of her life in varying formal and informal capacities. She began her formal social work career after graduating from the University of Toronto in the early 1980's. In 2003, she received her PhD in Sociology of Education and Equity Studies from the University of Toronto, Ontario Institute of Studies in Education. Following employment in the fields of psychiatric social work and addictions, she has been teaching at Ryerson University since 1988. Along with these formal employment undertakings, Akua has worked with varying community members and groups on issues of immigration, employment, education, criminal justice, feminism, anti-racism, health and other critical issues impacting many individuals and groups . As such, her research interests and community work continue to address the structural and complex issues that impede social justice and equitable treatment for many racialized and marginalized populations.
