Mid-year break
During Ryerson University's mid-year break, students doing a Fall/Winter placement are expected to complete a minimum of one week's worth of placement hours (14 hours for third year and 21 hours for fourth year).  These hours are to be arranged prior to the start of the Fall term undergraduate exam period and are to be mutually agreed upon by both the student and the Field Instructor. December 22, 2011 to January 3, 2012

This is a mandatory workshop for students who plan to do their third year placement (SWP 36A/B Field Practicum) during the 2012-2013 academic year.  Refer to the BSW Field Education Manual for additional information.

October 2011
Visits from Field Education Office staff

Field Education Office staff visit the following classes throughout the month of October to provide students information about the placement process for the 2012-2013 academic year.

SWP 31A/B Social Work Practice Seminar
SWP 302 Social Policy: Welfare and Programs
SWP 538 Social Work Research Part 1 (evening class only)

Students who plan to do a placement during the 2012-2013 academic year must submit a request in PlacePro by the deadline.  Refer to the BSW Field Education Manual for additional information.November 1 to November 29, 2011
Interview Preparation for the Field of Social Work workshop

This is a mandatory workshop for students who plan to do their third year placement (SWP 36A/B Field Practicum) during the 2012-2013 academic year.  Refer to the BSW Field Education Manual for additional information.

January 2012
Placement process - FallWinter placements
Student who submit a request in PlacePro to do a placement during the Fall 2012 / Winter 2013 can expect to actively work with the Field Education Office at any point during this time.  Refer to the BSW Field Education Manual for additional information.December 2011 to August 2012
Deadline for securing Fall/Winter placement
Students who do not secure a placement by this deadline must postpone doing the Field Practicum (SWP 36A/B or SWP 51A/B) and Social Work Practice Seminar (SWP 31A/B and SWP 50A/B) until the 2013-2014 academic year.August 15, 2012

Field Instructor Workshops

The School of Social Work's Field Education Office offers professional development workshops for Field Instructors each year.  These are free training opportunities for practitioners who are supervising a BSW or MSW student from Ryerson University in a field placement. 

Field Instructors receive reminders and details a couple of weeks prior to each workshop, including times and locations.  Field Instructors who are interested in attending any of these workshops can RSVP to swfield@ryerson.ca

The following workshops provide Field Instructors with key information about their role and responsibilities as a Field Instructor, offer an overview of the social work program at Ryerson University, and give information on specific areas relevant to Field Instruction.

The Critical Thinking for Critical Practices workshop series consist of two workshops.  The series is designed to provide professional development opportunities to Field Instructors in appreciation for their contribution to social work education.

Annual Field Education Appreciation Event

In recognition of the vital role of Field Instructors in social work education, the School hosts an annual Field Education Appreciation Event.  The first part of the event typically consists of interactive workshops that focus on self-care. These workshops include opportunities to participate in fun and relaxing activities (e.g., crafts, yoga, mindfulness/meditation).  The workshops are followed by a luncheon, which includes a presentation of the Field Instructors of the Year Awards.
