Perceptions of crime; social organization of urban neighbourhoods; public-police relations
My research program focuses on public perceptions of crime and the criminal justice system, and how these perceptions influence patterns of movement and social engagement in urban environments. I am currently examining how housing tenure and building structure relate to perceptions of safety in the local neighbourhood. In addition, I am working with a University of Calgary based research team to examine the management of high-risk offenders in Alberta. As part of this project, I am examining police-issued notifications of “high risk” offenders, and considering how crime risk is communicated to the public through official and unofficial means.
