Public Health and Safety
Public Health and Safety focuses on injury and disease prevention in the home and in our daily lives. Although a large majority of our graduates do become public health inspectors, this option prepares students for a wide variety of careers. Graduates may work for an environmental or public health agency at the municipal, provincial, or federal level, promoting health and safety awareness and enforcing laws that protect human health. As health care representatives, they may become involved in such issues as tobacco enforcement, West Nile Virus, SARS, water quality, and food handling.
Students will learn to anticipate, evaluate, and control a wide variety of health hazards in all areas of society-- restaurants, workplaces, schools, hospitals, beaches, swimming pools, day cares, and nursing homes--eventually becoming experts in illness prevention.
Program studies also prepare students for professional certification at the national level by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI). National certification permits graduates to seek employment opportunities across Canada as a Public Health Inspector (PHI).
The curriculum was designed around eight major themes that are key to understanding and managing public health and safety in our society:
- epidemiology and disease processes
- food science and hygiene
- occupational health and safety
- international health
- research methods
- risk assessment
- health administration and law
- health education, promotion, and planning.
