Introduction

How does the Guide work?

The Guide is divided into sections that outline the various types of business you may need to conduct at different times of the year. For example, there are sections on how to 'add' or 'swap' classes, graduation requirements, examinations, fees, and so on. You probably won't want (or need) to read the Guide from cover to cover. What you should plan to do is consult the relevant section of the Guide when you have questions or when it is time to carry out any administrative business.

Some of the great features you'll find inside:

Functions and their deadlines.

A glossary that defines terms you may not be familiar with.

Tips to provide helpful hints about procedures.

A Resource Directory to point you in the right direction for answers to your questions.

A topics of concern Index at the front to make it easier for you to find the information you need.

A pull out section containing valuable coupons and discounts to help your budget.

A chance to win cash loaded directly onto your Ryerson OneCard just for answering a few questions on this Guide.

A list of helpful telephone numbers.

Why should I read this Guide?

The purpose of this Guide is to help you find a quick and direct response to typical questions you might have. Use the Index page to find what you need, then flip to the appropriate page(s). The Guide is broken down into the following five sections to address your area of concern: Money Matters, Academic Matters, Student Supports, Taking Care of Business, and If You Have a Problem. We're hoping you won't, but if you do it's nice to know your options. Your significant date deadlines are arranged by the typical functions you'll come across so it's easier for you to keep track. Examples of which include adding/dropping a class, paying your fees on time, exam dates, etc.

They're right up front, so keep them handy. If you can't find something, simply log onto the search engine on www.ryerson.ca

Does this Guide replace the Ryerson Undergraduate Calendar?

No! The Undergraduate Calendar is still an important resource that you should plan to read and refer to (especially the section on your particular program). The online Undergraduate Calendar is the official statement of University curriculum and lists the courses required for each Ryerson program. The online calendar also contains descriptions for all undergraduate courses. More information about the Undergraduate Calendar is provided in Academic Matters: The Ryerson Calendars.

Does this Guide replace my department/school handbook?

No! Department or school handbooks continue to be an excellent source of information about your specific program. This Guide was designed to complement the program-specific information in department/school handbooks by providing general information that applies to students in ALL Ryerson undergraduate programs.

Does the Guide cover every aspect of student life?

No. You'll face a lot of different types of challenges as a student. This Guide focuses on administrative procedures and provides you with an overview of academic and student life challenges. Also included are the resources available on campus to help you cope. By consulting the information in this publication, you can avoid a lot of surprises during the coming year.
