Academic Standing

What is an Academic Standing?

Your Academic Standing is a statement of your overall academic performance.

Academic Standing Variation

The criteria for Academic Standing are the same across Ryerson, with some exceptions. Students in the following programs should consult the calendar for a description of the exceptions in their program:

Child and Youth Care

Disability Studies

Early Childhood Education

Graphic Communications Management

Journalism

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (all programs)

Midwifery

Performance Acting

Performance Dance

Performance Production

Social Work

Urban and Regional Planning

Refer to the 2012-2013 Full- or Part-Time Undergraduate Calendar for Academic Standing Variation details.

When is my Academic Standing calculated?

Your Academic Standing will be determined at the end of each semester in which you enroll in graded courses, e.g., Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer. An initial Academic Standing is not calculated until you have received three or more course grades (see Senate's Policy 46 on Grading, Promotion and Academic Standing [GPA Policy] 46). It is advisable that you check your academic record on RAMSS regularly, using the self-service Academic Advisement Report.

CLEAR

You are assigned a CLEAR Standing if you have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00, and you have not violated any Department/School Standing variations, or if you are on PROBATION, you must meet the terms of your PROBATIONARY contract.

What does CLEAR Standing mean?

A CLEAR Standing means you can go on with your program without any restrictions except for the normal pre-requisite requirements.

PROBATIONARY

You are assigned a PROBATIONARY Standing if you have a cumulative GPA of 1.00 to 1.99. Students who are re-instated after being REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW, are placed on PROBATION.

What should I do if I am on PROBATION?

You must visit your program department/school to determine a specific study plan (PROBATIONARY Contract). The plan will include specific courses, including failed courses that you are required to repeat. Your Study Plan may also include your participation in a range of learning skill activities (e.g. Learning Success Seminars, Study Skills, Writing Centre, etc.). You must sign your PROBATIONARY Contract with your program department/school by the last date to add classes for the semester, otherwise, your course enrollments and course intention requests for the semester in question, will be dropped.

You should consider why your academic performance is not up to par. Use campus resources to help you improve your studies.

What are the restrictions if I receive a PROBATIONARY Standing?

You will not be permitted to enroll in excess of a full load of courses (100%) including continuing education courses; resolutions of INC grades should be included in determining your course load. The number of courses you may take is determined by your program department.

What should my study plan include?

The study plan (PROBATIONARY Contract) should be constructed in such a way that if you successfully completed all your courses, you could achieve a CLEAR Standing after two semesters. Please ensure that you understand your program department/school's policy on dropping classes that are listed in your Study Plan. Dropping a course without permission from your program department, will result in a REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW Academic Standing at the end of the term.

If you are on PROBATION because of low grades but few or no failures, you may be required to repeat courses in which you received low marks like "D" or "D-" to raise your cumulative GPA up to 2.00.

How long do I have to improve my cumulative GPA while on Probation?

This will depend on your PROBATIONARY contract.

REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW

You are assigned a REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW Standing if:

It is not your first term at Ryerson, {b}AND

You have a cumulative GPA of less than 1.00; OR

You did not achieve what was required by you as per your PROBATIONARY Contract. {b}OR

You have not completed your program within the maximum time allowed. {b}OR

You have violated an approved department/school Standing variation.

You can be placed on DISCIPLINARY SUSPENSION for academic misconduct. This is similar to being REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW but not quite the same.

See the Student Code of Academic Conduct for more information.

What does REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW Standing mean?

REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW Standing means you may not continue in your program for at least twelve (12) months and you will not be able to stay in residence.

Who can I talk to about my Standing?

If you are given a Standing of REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW, it is important for you to get advice about what it means and what you might do next. Discuss your situation with your program department/school. Find out more about Ryerson's Fresh Start Program. Talk to someone at the Centre for Student Development and Counselling regarding your career choices and options. Go to your student association or Student Services if you are considering appealing. There's a seminar called "U201" (sign up at Ryerson Students' Union (RSU), SCC-311) on what to do if you are REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW.

Can I take courses while I am REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW (RTW)?

You may not take courses through The Chang School within 12 months of receiving a 'REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW' status. Courses taken elsewhere within 12 months from the time of your 'REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW' Standing and re-instatement or transfer to another program, are not eligible for Ryerson Transfer Credit and will not be used towards graduation requirements. RTW students may, however, request permission to participate in Ryerson's Fresh Start program. Program participation criteria is on the Current Students web site: (http://www.ryerson.ca/currentstudents/academics/reinstate).

RTW Students who are approved for the Fresh Start program will be able to enroll for two credit courses and a mandatory non-credit course in the second semester after becoming RTW. Successful completion of these requirements would enable the student to enroll for four courses in the next semester. Successful completion of the second semester of courses will lead to guaranteed reinstatement to the student's former program. In such cases all courses and grades will be applied to the student's program requirements. Students who fail to complete Fresh Start successfully, will still have the option to apply for re-instatement when their minimum 12 month RTW period is completed.

Can I take courses while I am appealing my Standing?

Yes you can, however, you must tell your School/Department that you are appealing and get their permission to enroll for courses. If you lose your appeal, course enrollments will be cancelled and your fees refunded.

How do I get back into my program after a REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW Standing?

Reinstatement will be considered by faculty/program committees based upon assessments and/or procedures developed by the School or Department. Past academic performance and space availability will normally be considerations.

How do I apply for Re-instatement?

It depends on when you received the REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW (RTW) Standing.

If you were REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW before Winter 2012 and are seeking re-instatement within 24 months of your RTW date, you must submit a request for re-instatement to your program/school or department.

If you were REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW in or since Winter 2012, you may sit out for 12 months and then apply for re-instatement using the Ryerson online re-instatement request form. Alternately, after sitting out for one semester you can request permission to participate in the Fresh Start Program. Successful completion of the Fresh Start Program will guarantee re-instatement to the student's former program. If you were REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW (Suspended) prior to September 2009, you must apply for re-instatement using a Ryerson online application form available at www.ryerson.ca/undergraduate/admission/apply/forms. Applications will be subject to space availability, admission deadline dates and procedures determined by Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment. See Admissions dates. You will be required to submit the completed form with an $80 (subject to change) application fee.

If you apply by February 1 for Fall, or before November 1 for Winter, you will be given equal consideration subject to space availability. Your application will not be guaranteed equal consideration, after this date.

What happens if I am re-instated?

If you are re-instated, you will be placed on PROBATIONARY Standing. You will need to follow the study plan (PROBATIONARY Contract) worked out with your department/school. See Academic Matters: Academic Standing for more information.

Remember that if you are re-instated after REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW Standing and you fail to meet?the requirements of your PROBATIONARY contract, you will receive a PERMANENT PROGRAM WITHDRAWAL Standing. Students who are Permanently Withdrawn from a program may not apply

for reinstatement into that program.

People to see about re-instatement:

See your program department/school for advice on conditions for re-instatement.
