Challenge Credit

What is a Challenge Credit?

A challenge credit is academic credit for skills and knowledge gained outside the traditional post-secondary environment. Usually this is gained through work experience.

The evaluation process and criteria used in the granting of Challenge Credits may differ from the normal grading process.

Can I challenge any credit?

No. You need to contact the teaching department for information on which courses can be challenged.

You may not apply for a challenge credit in a course that you have been enrolled in at Ryerson or at another institution.

You may not apply for a challenge credit in a course you have already attempted to challenge or have received a failed grade in.

A maximum of five single-term challenge credits may be applied toward your degree.

Consult the Teaching Department to determine the method of challenge.

The Ted Rogers School of Business Management does not allow Challenge Credit for courses taught by the School.

The Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, and the Faculty of Science does not allow Challenge Credit for courses taught by the Faculty.

How do I get a Challenge Credit?

Applications are available on-line at ryerson.ca/forms and at the Enrollment Services and Student Fees counter in POD-64. Follow the instructions on the back of the form. If you have any questions about the procedure, Curriculum Advising can help you out at www.ryerson.ca/curriculumadvising

You will be expected to fill out the first portion of the form and submit it to the Student Fees office with your payment.

The fee for a challenge is $175 (subject to change).

Some requirement will be made to verify your knowledge of the course material, usually an examination.

A successful challenge is recorded as CHG on your academic record. You receive the credit toward your degree, but it is not calculated in your grade point average.

To receive credit for a course you have already taken elsewhere, seeAcademic Matters: Transfer Credits.

To receive credit for a course you want to take elsewhere, see Academic Matters: Letter of Permission.
