Course Intention

What does Course Intention mean?

Course Intention is the first part of the enrollment process. You request the courses you expect to take in the upcoming academic year so that a timetable can be produced for you before open course enrollment.

Who goes through this process of course intention?

All full-time students must participate in the annual course intention process for the upcoming academic year. Adjustments can be made to your course intention requests in May and October. Your program department will send process and timing details to your Ryerson e-mail account.

If you are an out-of-phase student, you must complete the courses that were part of the curriculum at the time you were admitted to the program. See your program department if you are unsure.

Why is it so important that I pre-select my courses?

Course Intention requests enable your program department/school to determine which courses to offer and how many spaces and sections will be needed. If you do not submit your Course Intention request, there may not be enough space for you in the courses you want. You can also avoid the frustration and anxiety of trying to add courses during enrollment week.

For Full-time program students: Run an Advisement Report before and after submitting Intentions to determine what you need and whether classes you are enrolled in, apply to your graduation requirements.

When and how do I complete my Course Intention request?

Procedures are different for full-time and part-time programs. Please read the appropriate section below.

When making your selections, assume you will pass all the classes you are enrolled in now.

Courses with a number code ending in A/B are multi-term courses. e.g. NSE 32A/B

You will receive FNA grades, and incur tuition fee charges if you participate in the Course Intention process but do not attend classes, and do not officially drop the courses within the posted drop deadline dates.

Full-time Undergraduate Programs:

The Course Intention process takes place every year in mid-March. Check your Ryerson email or your program department/school for exact dates and times.

You can review your Winter 2013 Course Intention information during the week of September 24 at my.ryerson.ca (RAMSS). Click on Course Intention Enquiry and follow the prompts.

Part-time Undergraduate Programs:

The Course Intention process takes place in late February through to the end of March. Confirm the exact dates with your program department/school.

You will receive a Course Intention package that includes complete instructions and information on course offerings. You may submit Course Intentions for one or all of the Spring/Summer, Fall, and Winter terms.

Can I change my Course Intentions?

You may make changes to your Course Intentions (for example, if you failed a prerequisite course or if you just changed your mind about an elective). Make your changes online at my.ryerson.ca (RAMSS) in mid-May. Check your Ryerson email for exact dates.

If you have any questions about your course intention or the procedure, contact your program department/school. When they are not available, Enrollment Services and Student Fees may be able to answer your questions. Curriculum Advising can help you regarding choices for graduation purposes.
